I just said whatever meal they could offer was fine, since I don't want to be an undue burden.

She comes back with a plate of meat and some greens

 

"Thank you kindly. What do I owe?"

 

"Once gold for the lot of it, including the drinks"

 

I set down a gold piece on the counter, then eat my meal.

Once alone in his room, Erevan, exhausted by the day's many literal and figurative trials, sits cross-legged on the floor for his evening prayer. He gets through barely more than a few verses before his stoic calm cracks and he begins to softly sob.

After some time, Erevan dries his eyes, takes paper and ink from his pack, and begins to write a letter.
