I guess that could work in D&D if you allow the breaking of almost every rule of physics that goes into making an axe or sword.

 

Here's a slightly more plausible example. It's basically a handaxe-esque weapon which can be turned into a cleaver/machete-type weapon using a spring-loaded mechanism.

 

Emphasis on ‘slightly’.

Some blacksmiths in Baltimore actually forged a real one. It works pretty well.
