Personally, I would have gone with Detect Magic. Well, I didn't actually take it, but...

 

I'm pretty sure Erevan didn't have Detect Magic prepared. I don't know his spell list, though.

He's not casting off of the Cleric spell list.

 

Also, Detect Magic can by countered by Nystul's Magic Aura, a spell I bet you one post like you've never heard of / didn't know the effect of.

(As I understand it) He means that I prepare spells from the list, rather than casting the list directly.

 

Right. That was a thing. I actually remember it existing at one point, although it's such a near-useless spell that I don't see much of a reason to remember it.

Okay, that's a plainly bizarre choice of wording, then.

You can target a magical effect, but not end it? Why would you target it then? Can you dispel one spell acting upon another?

Seriously, if they were going to rule it like that, they should just errata the phrasing, IMO.
