New UA!

My thoughts:

• Druid Circle of Spores is cool. Spore transformation? Clouds of spores? Spore zombies? Even if it's not amazing statistically, the sheer flavor and fun element of the class puts it on the list of character concepts I want to try at some point.
• Fighter Brute is... not great. It rips off Champion Fighter and gives no new options. Sure, more damage and better death saving throws are okay, but they're generic and flavorless. In conclusion, there's minimal reason to use it over Champion.
• Wizard School of Invention is somewhere in between quality-wise. It feels a lot like Loremaster, but the new features are cool. Reckless Casting is a fun feature that fits the flavor well. Arcanomechanical Armor feels rather out of place, especially with the resistance to force damage. Why not have it be resistance to your own spells? That would be more flavorful and fun, to be able to do stuff like drop Fireballs on yourself and shrug it off.

 

Aw, when I read "Brute" I thought it would be like a juggernaut type. Feels bad.

 

F*** I stopped checking US after Xanathar’s. Isn’t the next take of the Artificer or Mystic expected soon too?

 

So I did some peeking around. Last UA I saw was fiendish options. Between that and this one, there was another UA released. Elf Subraces.

-Winged Elves are stated to exist in SCAG, so I'm happy they are a legit thing
-Sea Elves are stated to exist in SCAG, and Sea Half-Elves are a thing, so I'm happy they are now an option
-Some weird mix between Eladrin (UA version, not DMG version) and Wood Elves that feels out of place
-Shadowfell Elves? I'm happy that Shadowfell now has inhabitants, it lets me flesh it out more

Thoughts?

 

I actually agree on most things
The druid of the spore is Cool even if it's not the most powerful thing in the world And would be awesome to play
True the brute isn't THAT cool flavor wise it's pretty effective in combat it would definitely be a good choice for a new player
And the wizard school of Invention feels like Wild magic sorcerer just instead of Nat 1's triggering the table you get to roll a random spell or can trip which seems like it could be fun
Plus i'm probably gonna take it next level

 

Yeah, I like them.

Spore Druid seems like it would be PERFECT for Out of the Abyss, or basically ANY Underdark setting

Brute Fighter is mechanically nice, but it just isn't necessary thematically, as that's the role of the Champion Fighter

I like the Invention Wizard. They took the bad OP parts of Lore Master and kicked them out, then grabbed the good part and made it cooler. I like the armor idea, as it also draws on the Artificer UA from the Eberron UA. And, I don't see myself using the Wreckless Casting except for fun, as it's not THAT useful, but it is a nice way to use unprepared spells. And yes, as you stated, adds a wizard-type of Wild Magic.

And yeah, if you want to take your second level in wizard and be a Invention Wizard, I'll allow it. Light Armor does not effect your flying, so it should work.

 

I like the idea of winged elves. The traits gained by Elf are what make them not underpowered compared to Aarakocra (and apparently they fought dragons, so bird people being better than them wouldn't make sense. No offense, Aarakocra). Aside from that, infinite flight is probably good enough to balance things out (though no elven weapon training or extra ASIs is unfortunate).

 

Also, unlikes Winged Tieflings, their flight has the same armor restrictions as Aarakocra

 

Indeed. To be honest, they seem to work well on a monk since they don't need armor in the first place.
