Cancer: Should We Change Its Name?

I think that cancers lore should be changed, not really the name itself
it should be made to fit the zodiac sign.

Should we remove Earthquake now because it's a natural disaster that causes many tragic deaths every year and many people lose family members to such?

 

i mean if youre going to apply the logic that every one has against Cancer, why not them all, like Cardiac Arrest etc, and even Earthquake

 

Oh no, now people will be saying "You're cancer" instead of "You're , what an improvement.

 

So what if people joke about topics like that? As long as it's not with malicious intent it's fine. It's not like death threats or hate speech, where people are deliberately trying to cause harm to others. We can't just go around changing and censoring stuff just because someone is offended by something with no intent to do so.

And what makes it any different that Cancer is being joked about while others are not? Should we remove Earthquake if it gets joked about often?

 

Like aa said b4, that logic can be applied to literally anything with a negative connotation, regardless of the context or intent. If you want the item changed to get a new item or to fit the accuracy better that’s fine, but don’t do it just because it offends you.

 

I guess I should give my 5 cents on the topic.

It's fine that people what the item changed or removed, it's (partially) based on a disease that has torn apart families. But here's the problem; it's mainly based on the Zodiac sign. I don't know why they chose the disease instead of the sign for the stats, but I can only assume that it's because try to make a helmet based off a crab, without changing the look of it, isn't exactly straightfoward. But I don't think it should be removed.
Merely the word being present is enough to raise discussion and awareness over it, and that's good! For something as serious as cancer, the more people know about it and openly discuss it, the better. I'm not saying everything should be based around it, but removing it would partially stop these discussions and, generally, censor the subject.
So, in my opinion, as long as it stays in the game, in one way or another, whether that be changing the item or leaving it as is, i'm fine. But removing the item altogether just isn't the right thing to do.

 

We would not remove the item at all; it would just have its name changed, and according to the votes, a new helmet named Cancer that is more closely based on the zodiac would be implemented.

 

Fact is, there are several complains about Cancer's name, but as it seems not as much about these other items. And thats what makes Cancer different, why you can't apply this logic to the other items.

I mean, whats the problem with changing the name? The lore would benefit from a change, as a crab-based Cancer would fit the Zodiac theming more. And "I don't want it to be changed because people are offended." is one of the dumbest arguments I've ever heared. It is not even an argument, as it doesn't provide any reason why not changing the name would be better than changing it, it just shows that you don't care about other peoples feelings, that you like others to feel uncomfortable, that you like to harm them. Yes, some of the complains may not be serious, but some surely are, and these are the ones that we should take into account. And no, it doesn't matter if some people with relatives being affected by cancer are not offended, because they can't speak for everyone.

Thats actually the only serious argument for keeping the name and lore I've seen in this whole discussion. But I would assume that the positive effect of people getting to know cancer through Minecraft is quite small compared to the negative effect of people being seriously offended by it. The problem is not that this topic is being addressed, but how. Many TV shows or newspaper articles show how to do it right, explaining what cancer is, what its consequences are, etc., while in this game, Cancer actually gets a positive connotation by being a very useful and effective tool for defeating enemies. It is not an item that is just there, informing you about this topic. Not, it is special and basically without real substitute in two different aspects.

 

Why not just change the current Cancer’s name to Death or something and then make the new Zodiac Cancer based on water and fire. Since crabs live in water/around water and they have hard shells ie defence.

 

i think a good new name would be:
Black Pest
the lore refers to a plague from idk how many years ago, which killed tons of peeps, just like the black pest
and i dont think this one would offend anyone, as this disease nowadays is pretty much a thing of the past rather than an actual issue (or at least i dont see people talking constantly about it)

 

First of all, we’re not saying to not change the name so as to intentionally offend people. We’re arguing that the name shouldn’t be changed just because a small group of people get offended and start complaining. If even just the item team caters to them, we would lose a lot of potential items that could’ve been extremely well made, and this could be even worse if the entire content team went through with this. It’s already a shame that the item team are going to avoid medical terms, because Cardiac Arrest and Asphyxia are extremely well made items. Besides, you can tell that the majority of people are fine with the current name just by reading the replies in the thread. Avoiding things just because a few people might complain or get offended is basically censorship. Like everyone else, I’m fine with a name change because there is a valid reason for it here, which is to have a new Cancer to fit the zodiac sign better.

The results of both of these items IRL is the same: It kills a lot of people. What’s the difference if one is complained about by some irrelevant people?

 

I don’t care either way, but what I do care about is changing it for that reason. Like I said before, just because you’re offended by something, it doesn’t make it right to white-wash everything with a negative connotation, regardless of context or intent. So if anybody complains about those items only because it offends them, it therefore makes it right to change their names?

The harm of changing it for the reason that people are offended creates this expectation that if something offends you, it must be changed or censored. It’s the same reason that makes SJWs so stubborn and annoying because they refuse to listen to other points of view that don’t fit their narrative.
When does this stop? By limiting what the item team can name their items, we also lose out on a bunch of cool, creative items like cardiac arrest. And if you assume that people should take what they learn seriously about cancer on a Minecraft MMO server, I’m a bit worried. For crying out loud, do you honestly think that the item team is trying to say that cancer is good?

It’s not right for to hurl racial slurs or to harass people, but it’s also not right to censor anything with a negative connotation without regarding its context or intent. And the bottom line is, Cancer’s name is absolutely harmless. I’m for changing it to better fit the Zodiac, but I don’t want the item team to be limited on what names they can use because people might be offended.
