Game Design Balancing Chest Potions W/ Solutions

    The new addition of potions in chests is great! I really like the idea! But the execution is...eh. I've got two major points as to why, and a hand full of possible solutions.
    (I know this has already been brought up once, but I decided to go into more detail)​

    1.) merchant
    • here's a little scenario to consider:
    • If you had two options: 1.) to buy three potions for a chunk of money. or 2.) get three of the same exact potion for free while earning money, which would you choose?
    • The second one, of course! Why would you spend money on something when you can get it exactly the same for free?

    • There's no longer a trade-off.

    • The potion merchant should be the main source of potion, and the chests should just be little helpers along the way, not a full replacement.

    2.) difficulty level
    • It lowers the game's difficulty level.

    • Instead of thinking:"Jeez, I'm down to my last potion. Better be careful and make it last", I found myself going:"Oh? I'm almost dead? I'm all out of potions? good thing there's a chest full of 3/3 health potions for my level! Screw conservation and mindfulness! I can go around using potions willy-nilly with no negative consequences!"

    • The gavel update greatly improved the difficulty of wynn by making taking damage something to actually fear(which was well needed).

    • But now it feels like that's been lost.
    3.) Possible Solutions
    • Remove health potions from potion merchant(keep special potions). Remove special potions from chests.

    • Make potion merchant potions stronger/have more sips than current potions (making them worth the money). Leave chest potions as they are.

    • Keep potion merchant the same. Make chest potions have 60% chance of being 1/3 full, 30% chance of being 2/3 full, and 10% chance of being 3/3 full.

    • Lower chances of finding potions in higher level areas.

    • Make potions spawn without emeralds or items.

    • combine solutions
    feel free to offer other possible solutions

    Maybe just put like lvl 40 pots in lvl 50 areas, lvl 80 pots in lvl 90 areas etc.

    even then, a player could bypass the the merchant and rack up potions in the next area with ease. With this idea, I feel like the potions should be between 20-30 levels below the area they're in so they don't become your primary source of healing(making you rely on the merchant to give you the big guns).

    I think the potions found in chests should be like what the OP said before
    a random 1/3 or 2/3 or 3/3, but there should be negative effects
    You know
    when u find a perfect potion in a chest in the middle of the world
    that's a little off
    make it have like
    gives u blindness if drunk or something
    that'll be the downfall the chest pots
    it's a last reserve for when u can't buy any pots or anything

    I don't like this idea for the reason of: I like potions :( at lvl 88 as a archer with negative health regen this is really important for me ;(

    I meant each one was out of 100%. not that they added to 100%


    I never said to completely remove chest or merchant potions. I think the addition is really helpful, but just a little too helpful.

    Being 1/3, 2/3, and 3/3 are mutually exclusive results, as in it has to be one and only one of the three. They have to add up to 100%.

    I like potions in chests because for the longest times mages didn't need to buy potions at all with heal spell which gave it a big advantage over all the other classes. Now warriors, archers, and assassins at least won't need to spend so much money on potions while mages get a free pass. I think it's fine the way it is and doesn't need any balance changes since it indirectly balances mage down to where the other classes should be.

    In that case, doesn't it give mages even more of an advantage since they can get the potions too?

    I can speak for the mages and say that we don't use the potions.

    It'd be a bit redundant for a mage to use a health potion when they have a self healing spell that they have as soon as they begin the game wouldn't it?

    fair point. Though, I still feel it makes the game too easy, especially in areas that are supposed to be challenging for their level. For example: Troms and Rodoroc. Both of which have a boatload of chests.

    I'll go see if reducing the spawn rate of potions past level 60ish is something that can be done. At the early levels finding potions helps a lot for new players that might not have much money, but I can see what you mean by not really needing to worry about spending it and increasing the difficulty as the game goes on further.
    As for the special ones they should be reduced in chests as well, in my opinion, so they can still have that specialness from merchants while still somewhat justifying the 10EB cost on them.

    Thank you very much for your feedback, I will leave the thread open in-case anyone else wants to add onto more to this discussion and give their thoughts on what should be done with potions in regards to finding them.
