Use morph it’s cheap and good for leveling

Use whatever seems to fit how you like to play.

The system is exceptionally complex and allows for a large degree of personal freedom in designing builds, so telling you what I think is best may not work as well for you. As such, don't take this as me saying "this is what you should do" but rather as "here's the option I personally like best".

First off, if I was leveling a mage, I'd probably want to use a primarily spellspam build, using a lot of mana regen to cast spells a lot. In general, I'd put a lot of skill points (probably around half) into intel, while trying to split the remaining ones between damage and defense. I'd try to use items that give me mana regen or water and spell damage, and probably try to use primarily water damage weapons, because water damage scales with intel.

I'd probably go with riftwalker if I was a new player because it gives me good damage without giving up my heal spell, but I'd snag a few perks from arcanist and lightbender for some extra utility. Personally I go over and get the meteor damage perk, as well as purification and sentient snake, because I personally find it more effective than just going straight riftwalker.

I'd probably put more points into defensive skills than offensive, because as long as I can heal, I can keep a fight going and riftwalker will let me slowly stack damage as the fight goes on. On the other hand, as lightbender I might put more into offense because I have good survivability but my damage isn't as good, so those might give me an edge. On the other hand, I can always rely on teammates to do damage and I can heal and tank for them if I put most of my points into a defensive stat.

You can use any pieces you want really, having a good build isn't too important early on
what I usually do early game is just take the highest lvl and rarity pieces you find until you start struggling

if you want actual builds if your struggling I would recommend this thread: https://forums.wynncraft.com/threads/meta-gear-for-leveling.275840/
or you could also just use as many pieces of the morph set as u can which I usually do after lvl 40 or so, because morph is good enough to last you until endgame, and then just use the highest level and rarity weapon you find, and then I use adventurer's set from lvl 29-40

however, as other people said, there's a lot of freedom with the build system so there's unlimited options for builds you can use that are all viable. If you ever want something more specific you can ask in the wynncraft builds section of the forums https://forums.wynncraft.com/forums/class-builds.100/
