For a good portion of the hour, followed by going to the gate. As it's a good portion of an hour, can I take 20? My perception modifier is +0, so it would just be 20.

 

In 5th edition, you take 10, not 20.

Not what I mean... you can automatically succeed on certain tasks by spending 10 x the normal time needed to do that tasks. Social tasks and other tasks that can only be attempted once are exempt from this, as are any that the DM decides.
