Okay so instead Elzen and Erevan ponder together over what it is and any info about it. Rolls 14(kept earlier) or 9 =14+2= still 16, not a bad roll though

 

Both Erevan and Elzen stand, with one hand grasping the other's and the other hand toward the fence, eyes closed, frowning.

Erevan: "As long as it doesn't kill us, try whatever you like."
He has a slight edge in his voice.

 

Illia raises her hand and throws a small orb of holy fire at the gate. The metal is slightly heated from the impact, and it springs up in a small cloud of incredibly cold dust for a moment.

Erevan covers his mouth and nose with his robe.

 

Elzen takes out the gust spell paper and will cast it if the cloud gets close to get rid of it

I deliberately made this open-ended. There's no obvious solution that I know of (although maybe Illia's idea could work).
