The upcoming 2.0 spellbound update will add many new passive and active abilities in the game, and I think it would be rather unfortunate if everything could be unlocked by just simply leveling up, as this could be an opportunity to add a new type of loot to the game and increase class progression.

Ability codices would be items that upon consumption would either grant a class the ability to learn an ability, or improve an existing ability. The ability codex will disappear after being used and only works on that class, this means that on the trade market there should be a high demand for ability codices, as people constantly make new classes and would have to buy codices for each class

As for where these ability codices could be obtained, there is a lot of options but I would suggest putting the codices in the loot of the upcoming raid in the silent expanse. The developers can put them as rewards everywhere really, for example in quests or simply being able to buy it from a dungeon npc. But I would suggest putting them in raids, as raids really lack unique rewards except for corkian amplifiers.

This idea is inspired by Runescape 3, where unlocking and upgrading abilities using codices is part of the progression.

It's been known that Wynncraft's economy is beyond repair. I don't like the idea of having to spend in-game currency to unlock abilities; isn't it enough that you lock other abilities in choosing one? Players find it frustrating enough to obtain specific tomes from raids - tomes with almost negligible effects. Walling entire abilities behind raids seems unethical for less skilled groups of players. As someone with hundreds of Legendary Island, EO, 7/7 Forgery runs and raids I yearn for hard-earned rewards that are more comparable to the profits of loot running, but significant game mechanics such as what you're suggesting isn't it in my opinion.

Like others have said, these would be a bit overpowered since the entire skill tree could be gained at level 1 just by spending emeralds. I do agree though that there should be another way to get ability points other than by leveling up, but they didn’t say for sure that they would be gained by leveling up, they just said by “progressing”, which makes me think there’s another way other than leveling. So maybe quests will reward ability points to make them more differentiated from skill points and encourage questing — that’s what I think should be done with them, anyway, in addition to getting them by leveling up. And that wouldn’t be overpowered because quests are still locked behind leveling. As for the SE raid in 2.0, there’s already gonna be unique rewards in that, they said it has “unique items and tomes” so we’re covered there. Maybe they could add an item that resets your skill tree though, and that could be part of raids. They probably wouldn’t make resetting the skill tree use soul points as that would probably be too easy.

Well one could implement ability codices were a level 1 player can buy all the abilities, of course this is very bad game design.
That is not what I am suggesting however, im saying that they could add a few abilities unlocked via codices, and maybe a few upgrades to existing abilities, so one would still have to gain the ability via normal means.
Well I don't think the tomes from raids were designed so a player could obtain the most optimal ones in a short amount of time, it took me personally hundreds of runs to get perfect spell damage tomes. That is basically just part of raids progression, slowly getting the most optimal tomes. You can have an ability codex be tradable so you can just buy it with emeralds instead of obtaining it yourself in raids or whatever content they choose to use.
If you think that devalues the ability codex, you can have it be untradable, both options are valid in my opinion.
You can cheese with other ingame mechanics as well, I was thinking that they'd probably only have endgame codices so I dont think it would affect early game too much.

Why would it be "unfortunate if everything could be unlocked by just simply leveling up"? Is that not how skill trees is basically ever game work?

not gonna lie I feel like unlocking every skill tree perk from just leveling is really flat considering all the other ways people can get loot that are equally missing some stuff

adding a few of these abilities to raids would just be... more fun? I don't see why every ability needs to be unlocked by leveling.
