which three?
and the reason it is translated separately from the chinese, is that we use traditional (the more complicated one) form of characters and they use the simplified form of characters. On top of that, vocab usage and language structures can be different in certain situations. If the translators also factor in the spoken language and translate it in the form of the spoken wordings, that causes the resulting script to turn even further from the simplified chinese language. (yes Cantonese has a spoken and a written form of the language, its complicated as hell)

 

The story goes is that there were 3 languages in the area, which were completely different, and since chinese is all symbols, the 2 others needed a way of writing so they used chinese. I know mandarin is one of them.

 

the story is like this:
back in the waring dynasty after Zhou was broken up, different languages sprung to life during the war period. The country Qin united all nations and in the pricess imposed the language of Qin on all people within its boarders. That wiped away all other languages and made the Qin language the only source of language afterwards. Sool the Qin dynasty fell and the language broke up into many different dialets in different areas, even though the written language stayed relative the same (mainly due to writing and reading being not popular back then). Until the 20th century, the republic of china decided to impose a official and widely accepted language on all regions, so the mandarin we use today was invented based on the local language used in the Beijing area (the capital). This new mandarin was then slowly spread across the country and now everyone need to learn it

sorry if things are wrong, these are all from memory of the chinese history lessons i took 3-6 years ago, and i did not do any research.

我的华文一点也不好....That's my best...This is me trying to learn from my Mother as my school in Austaria doesn't teach fricking Chinese.Im happy :D

 

1. thats simplified chinese, not cantonese, cantonese uses complicated form of chinese
2. you should not feel happy, chinese is the 1st frequently spoken language in the world so you will lose a chance of communicating with them
3. chinese is actually not that scary, its just difficult to start so yeah :)
