No, not really. 3DS Max is more animation-type with a TON of plugins, and maya, although it has more plugin support, does not have as much features.
I currently have 3DS Max 2014 on a student license(No way I have $2000 :D ).
Hopefully you can get one too, if you want!

For you, I would start out in 3DS Max. I can give you some rigs and stuff to help you get started, and some sample animations to tinker around with, as well as help you on (almost :D ) Anything!
I don't know much about maya; I only animated in it for about two weeks. Personally, I don't really like maya as much as 3DS Max, but that's my biased point of view :D
