Sure. You can try and be friends with him. Maybe even best friends. But there will always be something inside you, yearning for more than just friendship.

It will slowly tear you apart, being so close to him yet not being able to take this final step, because you do not want to ruin what you already have, nor do you want others to percieve you that way. Yet deep inside you wish for nothing else than to be more than just friends.

because all soap opras or dramatic movies are based on just these kind of situations.
A one way love that no one wants to accept, the problems that the main character is facing because he cannot speak to his crush for some reason. All these things are put in Romantic films/soap opras to give it a hint of reality

Hoke does seem to regret some things though. But love is nothing you should regret hoke. Love is a great thing and should be cherished as long as its still there.
