My guess based on Tarod's disbelief of the wolf idea, is he got tired of being a hero.

He made it look like a wolf killed him, as he has a wolf temple near Nessak.

Then maybe while putting flowers in the temple, he pricked himself.

But supposedly, it was "what he thought was his infallible protection got used against him".

So the rose may have been enchanted in some way to make the temple more believable.

This is all just my idea however, and doesn't have much to back it up.
