It's pretty easy, most of the Western world uses some version of the taino word for it (batata)
Originally batata was for sweet potato (cause who wants to eat that white flavourless root?).
The Spanish called it patata cause they were an empty and could do what they want.
Then they discovered the white potatoes and called them the same name.

So most of the Western world uses patata or batata as the root for their word for potatoes and sweet potatoes

In Hebrew potato is "earth apple" and sweet potato is batata
Arabic potato in batata and sweet potato is "sweet batata"

Except for us dutchies who are like "AARDAPPEL" which is earth apple (what the fuck)

same in French and hebrew
