@Nepeta Leijon Probably the strongest female character mentioned, the one who saves the protagonist's life, and the one the protagonist aspires to be like and eventually ask out to be his girlfriend. She appears when he is in danger and usually helps him when he asks.
Then she could be a sort of mystery character, in a sense, who appears and disappears throughout the story and ends up saving the day at the end. She doesn't need to be the protagonist to be relevant to the plot; the protagonist is the one that drives the plot forward.
Well, if the story is centered around the protagonist looking up to the heroine, then the heroine doesn't necessarily need to be a protagonist. More the end-goal object, like a legendary treasure or magical artifact.
