I understand why many people including myself are sensitive to such a phrase, like "Kill yourself" however, by making phrases like this taboo, we give too much power to the word itself and promote the victimization of those who are at all sensitive to such phrases. 1/2
Of course leaving speech and expression unchecked by society makes the extremes of totalitarianism and reactionary radicals, or dare I say, fascist become normalized as well.
the problem with normalizing "kys" is, well, you can't. it's not a word, it's a phrase. like, racial slurs can be normalized because they're not made up of anything that has meaning, they're the fundamental fragment themselves. "kill yourself" will still mean the same thing unless you change "kill" or "yourself".
it's not the same, but should that phrase, or any be totally removed from the object of conversation? If something doesn't offend anyone present to hear it, is it offensive in that context?
flubby, the problem is, the phrase is infectious (as we can see through our biggest offender, the internet). to say it casually normalizes it to you and your buds, however it still cuts deep for people who have thoughts of suicide.
