So, I'm in band as lots of you probably know, and I want to persue music in post-secondary. That's been my plan since grade 7 and what I've always dreamed of doing.
But my band teacher, Mrs. Anderson... She's an amazing teacher, but she's never here! Last year she missed more than two months worth of classes, and she was gone for a whole month at the end of the year.
Well, Mrs. Anderson has only shown up for 5 classes this entire year so far, and the substitute is in Mexico for 14 weeks. And there's no other band teachers within an hour from here that could drive here every day to teach.
So we haven't done pretty much anything in band, and I'm not getting the music education I NEED to go to university for music! And none of this is my fault!
Tl:dr, I might not be able to persue music in university because my band teacher is in a mental hospital, the sub is in Mexico, and there's no band teachers anywhere near us to replace them. I'm getting my future stolen from me because of stupid decisions my superiors made, and our band is falling apart.
Have you considered joining a local ensemble near you, or simply taking the time to give yourself an hour of practice a day?
It is sad that you can't have a normal band class at the moment, but there are many things you can do to acquire the necessary skills to pursue an education. Simply flailing your arms around gets nothing done.
My schedule didn't work out for band this year, so I joined a local big-band near where I live. There are always opportunities, and saying that it is not your fault at all is immature and lazy.
There's no bands nearby except for the school one. And practicing won't fix the fact that I need a certain amount of music education in school to persue it in university, and I'm not getting it.
Eww I feel you. In my school there is a teacher as well who missed like a third of the last school year. She teaches spanish which I dont learn but those of my classmates who learn it missed a lot of the things which should have been taught during the year. I hope there will be a solution for you or maybe you can somehow find another way how you can do it.
Xavier, I am totally feeling for you… I agree with Helmchen & hope a solution can be found soon. Perhaps research alternative acceptable credentials by talking to the officials at the university music program.
