Game Mechanics Quest Dialogue Options have great potential.

Discussion in 'General Suggestions' started by Crouton_18, Jan 29, 2023.

?

Do you think this would improve the game?

  1. This would be abused to no end, so no

  2. This would be a good change for endgame players and particularly long quests, so yes

This is expanding on the idea of skippable content and optional lore dumps. This is something endgame players have been wanting for ages now because it takes roughly 50 hours to 100% the game if you have the experience of a player who has memorized everything.

It's not just that though. With secret discoveries, raids, dungeons, etc. You can cut down on time by being good at the game and memorizing puzzles. With quests, however, little can be done to speed through them other than high walk speed, the ability to sprint, the ability to skip parkour, and some memorization of puzzles. Nothing, and I repeat, nothing, can be done to bypass dialogue. Every time I have to do RoL I have to sit through 7 different cutscenes in RoL 3, 52 lines of dialogue in RoL 4, and I can do nothing about it.

Recently, dialogue options have seen some emergence in new quests, used to give some extra information about the lore or even ask the king of Rodoroc what he had for breakfast.

Those aren't good uses for dialogue options.

You can probably guess where I'm going with this, but instead of having special, unrelated lore revealed in quest dialogue, do it in a secret.

Instead, I propose using quest dialogue options as an optional way to skip quest dialogue. Make us fight the tree in RoL 4 or smth, but don't make me pull out my phone and browse reddit while I hold shift with my other hand.

If it would cause you to skip a quest stage it'd be a lot of work for something that just doesn't need attention right now. It could be an interesting idea, but currently it's just not something we'd want to put energy into working on

Core gameplay absolutely needs working on right now lol, some critical quests like A Headless History are basically garbage and lack any interesting content or replayability. That's inevitable, since designing/balancing hundreds of quests is hard, but that doesn't mean you should throw all solutions out the window.

Dialogue options/skippable stages are one of the easiest band-aid fixes to help players progress with less tedium. Why not consider the option?

Fair, you have deadlines I suppose, but keep in mind skipping long quest segments is something players have been wanting for a couple years now. I'm glad you're considering it, and maybe you could test run it during Fruma and see feedback idk.

What do you want me to say? Nothing at all? Would you rather I had not said anything and just make it seem like we simply didn't care about this suggestion or didn't read it at all?

I mean like, really. I just laid out the truth of it, I didn't say some horrible deplorable thing about the suggestion. Perhaps it's something we would be interested in working on, but this suggestion might not see actual consideration for a long time because it's just not something that'd be high on our priorities.
