If I had to make a slight change to the suggestion, I think there should be a /toggle friend requests [on/off] command. If it is turned on, then you can receive friend requests, and if it is turned off, you will not be able to see any requests sent to you, but you can still send requests.

I am really really on board with this idea!! I mean, this should already be in the game ages ago, friend request seems like a pretty basic and essential feature to have in an MMORPG...

Though can I make a suggestion? I would keep it simple and make Friend Requests similar to Party/Guild Invites.
I think it's unnecessary to have pending requests because most of the time a friend request would be sent when the other player is also online. (When will you even /friend add an offline player unless you're trying to stalk them? xD)
And then they would get a notification in chat (similar to party invites), asking them to /friend accept, or they can ignore them if they want.
I think it's also unlikely for a player to receive too many requests for them to handle so the 'pending requests' feature won't be that useful in my opinion.

One thing that I really don't want from your suggestion is that the other player can see you've denied his or her friend requests. I think that will be pretty awkward no? xD. If the player doesn't want to add back, again, they can just ignore the request.

Also, it would be pretty nice to be able to choose who can private message you.
I feel like /toggle pm [everyone/friends/none] should be a thing, to either receive private messages from everyone, from friends, or from nobody.
Toggleable party invites and friend requests should also be added, if for whatever reason a player or a YouTuber/mod is being harassed by them :)

 

I mean those situations can happen, like idk how others have it, but usually when I find new players that I enjoy being around and play with, I friend them right before I have to leave or before they have to leave. But sometimes it can so urgent that you have to leave instantly or they have to, so then the requests usually has to be sent to an offline player. That's only one example that I thought of immediately, there are probably more

From my own experience that's not true. When you're hosting dungeon parties, or any other parties, you get way too many requests and the chat is usually running like crazy so you can't respond to all of them. I know that's a very small percentage of the playerbase that have this "issue", but still having pending requests wouldn't hurt anyone and would help at least some people.

Ye, that's understandable, I only included that cuz I wanted players to know that their friend request has been denied so they wouldn't be left hanging, but I get your point of view as well.
