Personally, I would get Legendaries, and if they aren't good, just Blacksmith 'em.
My advice always is that if you are going to your bank after (or during) a lootrun, and you have a single slot left in your inventory, you're missing out on at least 1 emerald.
You can always throw out something useless whilst running to pick up something better.

note that in 1.20 they supposedly fixed blacksmith prices so you can blacksmith for a profit

personally, i wouldn't recommend collecting legendaries, at least as of now. market is oversaturated, so they won't sell unless they are godlike rolls. i would advise collecting t4+ powders and items in high demand, like atlas, yang, frenzied mockery etc

I only ever place Fabled+ items in the Market and sell everything else. In my opinion, unless the Legendary you're going for has some really good stats and is somehow more difficult to come by, don't waste your time.

I've always gotten at least an EB in profit from identifying and blacksmithing them. If you want to make some bank in the market, sell powders. I've spent like 5LE on them alone in the past week because collecting them is so much more tedious than finding a Legendary.

When I lootrun I collect legendaries because if you blacksmith them you will make money off of them even if it is just a little bit. Also T4 powders sell for a lot on the market.

Here's a list of things you will need in order to lootrun and maximize* profit:
    • Loot bonus. Lots of loot bonus. Unless you can afford a Discoverer, 90-100 LB will suffice when lootrunning.
    • Loot quality gear. Makes you see uniques and rares less often, legendaries and fableds more often, and improves your odds of finding a mythic.
    • Loot consumables. Optional, unless you have a lot of money to burn or a lot of ingredients/materials to make them.
    • For Archer, a move speed bow like Gale's Force or Return to Ether. If you're rich/lucky, Stratiformis.
    • For Mage, any wand works as long as you can wear all of your loot gear AND you have 1 cost teleports. 1.20 introduces a new Helmet slot item - Gale's Sight, which reduces the cost of Teleport by up to 4 mana, flat.
And luck. Lots of it. You're fairly unlikely to find a Mythic, so pick up any T4 powders, high demand accessories (Atlas, Yang, Kaze, Old Keeper's Ring etc.), high demand armor/weapons (must have (very) great rolls in order to sell!) and high demand ingredients (Crystallized Organs and Sought-After Ores are a must-get, as well as Ancient Currency (LQ gear), Cataratite (durability booster in LQ accessories), many T1 ingredients commonly used for power leveling crafting professions, etc.).

*Your luck and loot content of the chests (longer the chest remains unopened, better the loot) are the limiting factor in maximum profit. More loot there are in a chest and luckier you are with your finds, more profit you will get from lootrunning.

the price for identifying Legenderies is higher than the (average) price for blacksmithing an identified legendary. On average, the most profit you will get from blacksmithing them, is from blacksmithing an unidentified version. Which is worth just as much as an unidentified unique item. (Which is worth less than a common item.)

If you're lootrunning, these unidentified legendaries still take up an inventory slot. Which you can see as worth at least 64 emeralds worth when lootrunnning. Since an unidentified legendary is worth less than that, people who lootrun alot for the money don't bother with legendaries anymore.

The legendaries on the market are from suckers like me who still identify legendaries because they like seeing numbers appear on weapons and don't really lootrun.

I take legendaries on lootruns because I know I can still make money from selling the ingredients in my pouch, so even if I lose a bit of money on blacksmithing legendaries I still gain more with the emeralds in my inventory and the ingredients in my pouch

Could I see where/what the average price for items sold to the blacksmith is? I've nearly always turned a profit, be it a few emerald or multiple blocks.

The only items I almost hardly ever see a profit for are the set items.

    Minecraft:
(223+670)/2 = 446.5 emeralds average price from blacksmith.
    identification cost = 458 emeralds.

The average price for identified items relative to their identification cost goes down as their level gets higher. So when you were testing it out, you were probably testing with lower level legendaries.
