This post is not intented to throw quest makers under the bus in any way so don't kill me please

It's been a while since I've made a quest review so I figured while we're all bored to hell and back cuz Cornavirus is fucking everything up I figured now would be a good time to slightly entertain 2 or 3 people for a couple minutes.

That's right baby I'm back, and I figured since my first 2 reviews where on quests I don't like I thought I may as well review something I do like.
    Kinda.
So today we are reviewing A Journey Through SE.

This review will be different from my first 2 as instead of a Step-by-Step review, or a comparason review, I'm going to be separating what I like and don't like. And we're gonna start off with the stuff I like because being nagative is more fun and I wanna save it for last.

So let's go, let's see what I like.

The first thing I should mention is I really like Aledar being a main character, bringing back characters from old quests makes the game feel like it has some continuity to it, and is definitely an idea that I think should be revisited, a lot. As in, at some point, I want a majority of quests to have familliar characters, probably when we never get the main story line.

Another thing I like is the gameplay, even though lag can ruin things like the wall parcour, it's really not all that fair to judge a feature based on what lag can do to it. There are moments where lag can mesh with a part of a quest so poorly that it is fair to judge it accordingly, but not usually. So out of fairness I'm going to look at this with a lagless context.

I honestly can't really think of any gameplay I dislike, the worm with the rising and falling stomach acid, the Irtack maze, the Parcour puzzle where you mine platforms above the tar pit, the afformentioned wall parcour, the void holes, and even the fighting area on the way to Lutho IMO are all good. I can't think of a single gameplay feature that I don't like in this quest. It's all unique and engaging, the only fetching is in part one with Aledar but they made even that fun by adding a neat flying section and other cool mechanics to make it enjoyable.

This quest also introduced a neat piece of tech with the flying angel wings I just mentioned in part 1, that's a neat mechanic I'd like to see come back.

The cutscene at the end is also fucking awesome, and speaking of the end...

    The Sacrifice.

This part is one of the best made stages in any quest, this got my stone soul to like 1% on the crying meter, I honestly felt bad after killing Aledar. That and they even added an emotional OST making it even more hard hititng, then capping it off with the awesome cutscene just added to the perfection. The sacrifice is given more meaning when you take into account this is the only major reacurring character in the game. This sequence was arguably the best in the game, I honestly can't think if any other moment I like more.

And with that all out of the way let's hit the shit I don't like.

The characters that aren't Aledar fucking suck. Elphaba would be forgettable as fuck if not for the stolen liver. She is only remembered because of a fucking meme. I honestlt don't even remember anything about her, I don't even know if she has any character traits at all, and I dom't care enough to check. Then there's Lucio, and I fucking hate Lucio. His only character traiys are that hes a brute and and idiot. And I cannot stress how mach I hate this kind of character type in any form of media. An thats still kore than we can say about Elphaba. Our side charcters are made up of a forgettable heroine and the worst character archetype to ever.

Hey. Does anyone remeber the point in the quest where we have to visit a blacksmith named fucking DREN (I wish I was making that up) and he tells us "As you all know there are 5 elements" and he lists the elements. And then BAM, suddenly there is a sixth element called fucking Darkness.

First of all, this just tells me the game has been lying to me about there being 5 elements, it feels like when school's been teaching you about how there are 3 states of matter no more no less, solid, liquid and gas, and then "Oh yeah, we've been lying to you since like, first grade cuz theres actually a 4th state of matter called plasma" Like, man, what the fuck. Don't tell me theres a certain number of elemts and the do a 180 and be like, Oh WatE DId I EvuR TELl YOu abOuT DerKNiSs???

Second, don't fuck with the lore and add a 6th element that we've never heard of before and never hear from again just for an extra step in a quest. This is some Gavel level shit right here.

And lastly, serioursly? Darkness is a fucking ELEMENT? What the fuck. All rthis does is just push the shitty light vs dark narrative, and even if it didn't, it's still stupid as fuck. Like, a darkness element? Seriously? Wtf, man.

Aledar is a bit inconsitent in this quest as well, at one point he's tough and intelligent and then the next you're just like, dude wtf? In part 1 he tells Lucio not to head to the obsessor because it's a trick and then 2 seconds later trys talking to a fake miner then gets eating by a giant worm. Wtf are you doing mate? He also has a brilliant idea to try to charge into obsidian to break it when he's already like half dead. Also why couldn't he drink a potion and help us fight during AledarKart?

And lastly, the fucking unskippable dialouge. Fun fact, every fucking line of dialouge in this quest is unskippable. I remeber playing through this the first time and seeing the 1/45 or smth like that before Lucio got taken by the obsessor, and I had a fucking heart attack when I thought I would have to sit through it 6 times. The moving NPCs and interactive cutscenes that come with the unskippable dialouge is really great for the quests but untill CT can make it skippable, they need to consider how tedious this is on multiple playthroughs before tossing it out to us like candy.

So while this questline, particularly part 1, is a tad underwhlming as our introduction to the Dern storyline I still can't hate it too much, though it had more flaws than other good quests, there was still a lot to enjoy about it, and I still had fun. So I'm gonna give A Jorney Through SE a 7/10.

Some people consider special "Structure changin crystals" as 5th state of matter (they got discovered in 2019) ... so they lied at you 2 times.

I agree with just about everything here, but I have a minor nitpick about the unskippable dialogue. I did these 2 quests yesterday for the second time and didn't really have any problems with overly long portions of dialogue - outside of the introduction and when you're just about to enter the mines. you can actually progress the blacksmith cutscenes faster by clicking on some of the NPCs so surely Pepo atleast acknowledged people wanted more dialogue skips, perhaps it was just mechanically implausible for other portions of the quests to have skips.

I do vaguely remeber 1 bit being skippable but if I remember correctly it's only a couple lines.

And not everyone has problems with all the unskippable dialouge, I feel like I'm a bit more chill about it than most but I know a lot of people hate too much of it with a burning passion, and since this quest does it more than any others I felt I just couldn't leave it out.

Let's not forget superfluids, shall we? In all seriousness, I agree with a large portion of what you said; the game play is excellent, the characters less so, and the unskippable dialogue can go stick its face in a skunk's... Yeah, it's a *little* bit tedious, especially since I have to walk at a predetermined pace or they whine about me running off or lagging behind. After doing it twice, it took me a long time to muster the resolve to get my other classes through it. It's great the first time, but there definitely should be a way to skip through it on subsequent playthroughs.

I do think however, with lag being as regular as the rising and setting of the sun, it's fair to negatively judge things that are messed up by lag, such as the wall parkour. The first time I did it, it was lagging ridiculously, which meant I only bounced about half the time. Combine that with me sucking at parkour and it took me like 20 minutes. I was entirely less than amused. The second time I went through however, there was almost no lag and I thought it was great, so if lag is ever fixed, I'd love to see more of that type of parkour.
