What do "+150 Water Defense" and "-150 Thunder Defense" even mean? I know that these makes you more resistant to water damage and more susceptible to thunder damage, respectively, but I don't know how they work.

How do these defense values affect me?

I am not sure about this but... I think it is adding/subtracting the damage from the normal damage you get.

so... Here is an example..: Basic fire damage 50
-50 Fire defense you get 100 fire damage
+50 Fire defense you get 0 fire damage

More likely however is that it is the % of the damage..

    Basic fire damage 50 again...
-50 fire defense you get 75 fire damage
+50 fire defense you get 25 fire damage

As I said... I am not sure about this one but... the 2nd one seems more likely.

I'm 99% sure it's add/subtract, which is why enemies with high rainbow defenses are so powerful. If your opponent has 300 def in every element and you're using a rainbow build that doesn't do enough damage... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

tbh, the second (% of damage) method doesn't make any sense. that's because if the game really calculated damage that way, 100 ele def in each element would take no elemental damage oof

Yeah the percentage affects the raw elemental defence, therefor making it subtract more.
