I think you're getting the lore confused here. The castle was designed by Skien as a fort for the Tromsian army (explaining the odd layout), and gradually became more paranoid, essentially turning it into a prison for his soldiers. Trapped, everyone there fell to the corruption and became the undead inhabitants of the island we know.

 

I dunno man, that place is pretty intact
Like, it's honestly just vine covered; the buildings are actually in decent condition
