Website & Forums Correcting The Reported "average" Ids.

Discussion in 'General Suggestions' started by Moe_Ronickah, Feb 25, 2016.

?

Would it be nice to have the real average ids and the real range reported in the Item Guide?

  1. Yes, but it may be too much work to ask for right now.

  2. No, because accuracy doesn't matter.

Once upon a time, three guys, known as Salted, Grian, and Jumla, made a game called WynnCraft, centered around the mythical land of Wynn. As part of that game, they eventually made items that held hidden attributes, what we now commonly refer to as "identifications". When these three young men made their original identifications, they made them with some variability, specifically, a variability of +/- 30%, and they told everyone what the average identifications were of those items. And all was good and fine in the world of WynnCraft.

Now, quite a while later, those three young men, and a whole host of builders and game masters have come along, and created a new land. A land called Gavel. And they have added new items. Lots of new items. And they have changed the variability of the identification system, such that it now varies by -70% to +30%, or, as they told it, by 0.30n to 1.30n, where n is the average value of the identifications. This is odd, says the mathematical part of my brain. My brains says to me "The average of a set of is found by taking the sum of the objects in the set and then dividing that sum by the number of objects in that set". Yes, my brain really does think that way, at times. And, therefore, the average of any two members of a set should be equally distant from both members of the set. But how can this be, if the variability is 0.30n to 1.30n? Alas, it cannot! So, the mathematical part of my brain said to me "Go forth and work this mess out".

"OK." Look, when by brain talks to me, I listen.

The correct range of the original average identification, n, was found by multiplying n by 0.7 and 1.3, therefore 0.7n + 1.3n /2 = 1.0n. Simple enough.

    Now, we have n, the so-called average identification, with a range of 0.3n to 1.3n. So, 0.3n + 1.3n = 1.6n, and 1.6n /2 = 0.8n, which is not mathematically correct. It should be 1.0n.

The fix is this; take the current reported average, and multiply it by 0.8 to report the true average. The range is then found by taking 1.3n - 0.8n = 0.5n. We can check this by taking 0.8n - 0.3n = 0.5n. So, the variability in identifications is +/-50%.

And that's where my brain said, "Go get something to eat and stop ignoring my hunger messages."

Interesting idea, though they could just change the name from "average" to something else. Doesn't matter too much in my opinion, but it's not a complete no (add a poll option for that? hue).

I don't necessarily think they should necessarily correct the average IDs, we're all just labelling them wrong.

The current "average" we all speak of are the base stats of the item as displayed on the Item Guides, while the actual "average" is roughly the average IDs between every person in the game that has that item.

So if that was somehow super confusing, I'll probably make it even more confusing, but also less confusing (that just made it even more confusing LOL)

The "average" we all say is the base stats. Base stats=1.0x of the stats displayed on the Item Guides, which is just what's displayed.

The actual average is, as you said, 0.8x the base stats.

Oh yeah and thanks to @Dodo for explaining it to me when the change was first made, he can probably explain it 10x better because my explanation skills are trash right now.

"Base" usually means "bottom", however, I can see your point as "base" may also mean "basic". Even so, something needs to be corrected, either in the numbers or in the nomenclature.
