Obviously nothing like the online map/wynntils map is possible but the ability tree has demonstrated that graph based UIs in the game are both practical and user friendly.
An abstract map similar in style to the tube/metro map could effectively communicate directions and positions of different settlements, dungeons, and other points of interest and allow them to be marked as a waypoint without having to search through completed content.
The UI could be navigable through clickable arrows similar to the ability tree if need be, and could be kept free from clutter using layers depending on what type of area a player wants to view.
Furthermore, the maps could be split by province and locked behind one of the initial quests or a new quest in the relevant area, such as a map of Wynn being unlocked at the end of The King's Recruit, a map of the ocean from the seaskipper captain, or a map of Gavel from that orc hunting quest in Llevigar, with more information being viewable as the player unlocks discoveries.

My idea for this is that there could be a map "menu" wherein the map is made up of "items" hand-drawn to make up a visible map, like a larger-scale version of how the ability tree UI works. You could scroll the map in each cardinal direction to see more of it and highlight cities and areas to see their name and level. Maybe it could even fully replace teleport scrolls so you would unlock the teleport with emeralds and then be able to click on the city in the map to use a teleport charge to go there instead of having a bunch of different scrolls.

No I mean an actually hand drawn UI made out of custom "items" to make up an actual visible map, not just whatever the territory menu is. I suppose the territory menu kinda does this if only a little bit but what I mean is if every single tile of the territory was a hand-drawn flat piece of a map. Similar to how in the ability tree menu, each node and "button" is actually a custom-textured item, the "map" would be made up of custom-textured items drawn to make up each location of Wynncraft, meaning it would take up a metric ton of unique custom item textures to make up the whole map.

Edit: forum was being weird and cut off half a sentence.

God how many different 16x16 png textures for every single tiny sector of the map are we going to need to store in the resource pack

can't you set it up so multiple items draw from the same texture file?

Something Moderabo and me worked on back in 2021. (Mostly him, I really just made a proof of concept that he really faced head on.)

I would change how it works quite a bit nowadays in order to minimize scope and ultimately maximize sustainability (one major issue with a map is the constant need to update countless small textures every map update)

That being said, I don't want to go into the specifics of how I think it's best done, especially on a thread that isn't mine.
Ultimately though, it is possible, and doable fairly reasonably within Wynncraft.

If we get an in-game map, it should be blank at first and filled in as you explore. In fact, we already have the means for this via discoveries.
