This is a rehash of an old thread I made regarding bringing back refineries; I've chosen to remake it because there seemed to be confusion about what I suggested and that I was referring to pre-1.19 professions. Hopefully this clears up and illustrates my point better than I did before.

In 1.19, some key changes were made to professions. The material weight mechanic was removed and instead durability was added to gathering tools. Refineries and unprocessed materials were also removed, and you now would instantly get a refined resource of your choice at the source. Removing material weight on the player was absolutely a good change and I am not advocating for its return, but the removal of unprocessed materials felt like a change tacked on because of the community's dislike of the refinery & weight system.

Unprocessed materials have a few advantages over our current system of gathering. For one, it's the fact that you don't have to decide at the source which specific material you want. Often times when one is gathering materials, especially if specifically for XP, you don't have a desire for either material or the other, and so you are left with the choice of either trying to gather an even amount of both materials which would take up even more unnecessary space in your bank, or only gather one and hope you don't need the other in the future. If unprocessed materials were brought back, you could have the option of turning them into either material in the future, for when you need it.

There is, however, the question of how you would actually turn the unprocessed materials into refined. Refineries are a controversial topic due to how poorly 1.18 professions were (even compared to now). They were slow, had a chance to fail, only gave gathering XP once you refined the material, and often placed in weird locations far from major grind spots. If Wynn wanted to go down the refinery route, some improvements should be made. For one, the time to actually refine materials should be removed and become instant instead. Two, you should get the gathering XP and have the chance or not of the material being successfully gathered at the node itself, and three, refineries should be more properly placed around cities/towns and major grind spots.

There's a lot of issues with how past refineries were and making them work would potentially just be unnecessary (although, I just think the actual refinery machines were cool as hell). So why not just give the ability to the player? With an unprocessed material in your hand, either left or right clicking would turn it into a respective type of material, and shifting whilst doing so could transform the entire stack. This is the much easier (and probably better) solution, so what do you guys think? Do you want to see unprocessed materials return?

one thing- you did get most of the XP at the node. other than that yeah it was just so much cooler to have refineries

I think unprocessed materials would be mildly fine, just as long as refineries don't come back though.

    PLEASE.

Unrefined materials are better for bank space, better for gatherers who just want to get xp then sell their shit effortlessly, and can transfer RNG to the consumer. I've been wanting this since they removed shit.

Also yes pls to instant refineries. Plus they just looked so cool

Why are you against readding refineries, so long as refining was made instant?

Even if refining was made instant at a refinery, you would still have to go out of your way from your bank to the refinery then back in order to store items. Plus, refining items turns 1 stack of items into potentially 6 different stacks, which is even more inventory trouble to deal with when traveling to and fro.

It would be really unnecessary and make the whole process more tedious with no gain.

I don't think the whole walking to the refinery thing is a real issue. If you can walk to the resource nodes, you can walk the very short distance to refine your materials. In my eyes, that very small negative is worth the, in my opinion, large benefit of refining.

What you said about inventory space is also incorrect. While yes, refining an entire inventory full will result in 3 types of items but it's not like you're getting 3 items per item refined. They'll still sort out into approximately the same amount of stacks. Worst case scenario, you can't refine at most 1 stack of your 25+ stacks of resources.

As a whole, the argument you make has little weight. What weight there is, isn't really significant when considering the benefits of being able to have unrefined materials.

Just wanted to point out that I didn't say refineries themselves needed to come back and we could give that ability to the player, this thread is mainly about unprocessed materials

That being said, refineries were dope
