EDIT: tl;dr Ads from non specifically mc stuff in the minecraft game is illegal, so it's kinda pointless to speculate.

Personally I have a great set up, great internet, great pc. But no matter what I have tried the lag on this server is sometimes insane. I'm not an expert on this, but I would be happy to get (non intrusive) ads if it meant the servers could be run with a higher budget and lower the lag.

My definition of non-intrusive would mainly just be that you don't have to stop what you're doing to watch an ad or popup, or they don't actually get in the way of something you are trying to do. but more like random billboards around the world and chat messages.

I don't know if this is even possible so maybe this is just a pointless thread, but I have recently just stopped playing wynncraft from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm because I just can't deal with lag in those times.

EDIT: Ok, so first off I knew I was a little ignorant on the topic when I made the thread but I did look around a lot before I did.

To me it looks like legally this isn't possible, (Unless they were to advertise other minecraft servers or something very similar, which other servers seem just as unlikely to sponsor.) Or they put the ads on these forums and similar. Which I understand no one wants to be in a fantasy world or website (myself included this was a giant thing I kept thinking of when making this post) and see a random ad for how honey can save you money when making your squarespace website about audible books. I was actually very curious about the poll and it was a lot more one sided than I expected. (oof, but if I didn't lag I probably would have voted the same) Personally I would be fine with seeing ads on the forums and general website. (again if that's possible, I'm still a little ignorant.)

I was aware that the problems with lag were with the host (this is actually very common for minecraft servers) But I also knew that more money would allow going to a better host. Which it seems like the admins are already long-term working on switching to a better provider (or something similar) Which, heck yeah hope that happens soon, but no rush.

The only thing that I've seen funding wynncraft is their shop, and I doubt there are a very large amount of consumers in there. Actually a large reason I wanted ads was because I don't buy things but ads are an easy way to support.

Also I am aware of how ads work, and companies are fully willing to pay to simply have a small sign of their product in various places. And I would be willing to bet many places would be willing to sponsor this. (But it's not legal so that was a pointless thing.)

Someone said the servers are likely in Canada, so I am going to try using a Canadian vpn and get back to you.

for the record I'm in America mountain time and I have 608 mbs upload and 123 mbs download speed and my ping in things like hypixel is consistently 40 or lower and it's 90+ in wynncraft.

tl;dr Ads from non specifically mc stuff in the minecraft game is illegal, so it's kinda pointless to speculate.

Idk if on-screen ads could work, but billboards would. Although it would look terrible in the world and ruin immersion, and I doubt many companies would even sponsor a Minecraft server.

keep in mind advertisers are going to pay less money depending on how their ad is displayed, so non intrusive ones could potentially do more harm than good. In world ads would definitely not be non intrusive at all as well, seeing a billboard of some random vitamin company in nesaak would immediately ruin the games immersion.

earlier today, salted has said the lag reasons are mainly from the host wynncraft uses, and unless they were to instantly change the infrastructure the lag will be staying. this means even if wynn had more funding from ads the lag would stay for the time being, and the websites and world would be littered with shameless corporate shilling.

How will the companies make money if the ads are "non-intrusive" and no one clicks on them or buys what they're trying to sell. Remember what ads are for, although I like that you tried to come up with a solution

I was laughing at the idea of in game ads, but I actually don't think ads on the website or forums would be a huge deal if they need a little cash on the side. That being said you're completely right about them not making much money and I use an ad-block anyways so for all I know they could be covering the front page and I would never know.

Also, crippling server lag is almost never a problem unless there's a new update, a dungeon or a prof party. You might have a decent setup, but server lag is often caused by distance from the server. I don't know where you live, but if you live in Asia or Europe you should try connecting to the EU servers. I'm 99% sure the servers are in Canada so if you're in the Southern States I can also imagine that you wouldn't have the greatest connection.

    Also, you should probably read this (though I feel like you probably have);

I don't see how it would unless it was in-game, even then Hypixel have the option to watch an advert to get a daily reward

hypixel's daily reward ads advertise their own server right? meaning it follows the EULA, where profitable advertising for out-of-minecraft organizations wouldnt

right and for the op, this thread might be a good read as it entails details on hosting issues

The forums don't count as Minecraft though do they? The forums are a website and not the game despite being linked to it (see Minecraftservers.com for an example where they use ads). Note my response mentions "in-game", although I can understand your confusion as what I worded could have been more simplistic and have more information to really outline what I meant.

The forums are related to minecraft. The guidelines say "unrelated to Minecraft". Pretty easy to understand.

Aren't they talking about in game adverts on that ss? Pretty sure since the forums aren't associated with Mojang or anything it would technically be fine.

That's true, sorry @StormKing3 for my attitude!
I read too into it and confused myself (thought you were saying the opposite of what you meant) but we ended up agreeing... lol

Ads on website/forums wouldn't be against EULA but I doubt that will happen for obvious reasons

So would it be legal to do something like have a player come to this site and watch an ad outside minecraft for a cosmetic item? I know hypixel just advertises their own store when they do it but could they advertise something else? But then likely everyone would still be opposed to that.

I think it technically would be, although I'm not sure they would be allowed to do that and link it to a reward in-game. But what they could do fo defininite is show ads on here and the revenue made is given to the company(?) to put towards the game
