World Bring Back Swarms

Discussion in 'General Suggestions' started by Samsam101, Dec 6, 2019.

?

Do you think these would be good additional swarm features?

  1. Swarm bombs- Another bomb type, when thrown it instantly begins the 10 minute swarm countdown.

    35.0%
  2. Level restriction- Have it so that all the enemies are high level and you need to be lv 90+ to join

    15.0%
  3. Swarm vote- Vote for the level range of the mobs

    5.0%
  4. swarms are garbage can we just not have them back

    50.0%
Multiple votes are allowed.

I was not here to ever see this feature, but if you want to read up on it, check here. https://wynncraft.gamepedia.com/Swarm

These were removed because they lagged the server too much, but I have an idea as to how they could return.
Basically, you would get a large message on your screen saying: Swarm begins in [insert town name here] in 10 minutes, giving the player time to get there. Then, upon entering the town, they would be asked in chat if they want to help stop the swarm. If they click yes, they will be teleported to a different server that is made for swarms, where they are in that town and they wait for the rest of the time with their fellow players. You cannot exit the town, but you can say /swarm leave in chat to exit. But how would it function?
Basically, when it begins, PVP mode (for those using it) is turned off. If you die, you are sent back to the regular server. A certain amount of mobs, say 1000, have to be slain. It depends on how many players are participating. Once that goal has been reached, a boss wave will begin. The levels of every mob would depend on the average level of the players participating. The boss could be Bak'al or something like that but it would always be level 150 because there would almost certainly be endgame players participating. Once the raid ends, if you survived, you get a certain amount of emeralds and xp depending on your level, and you have a chance to get a fabled weapon or armor (there would be different ones for every 10 levels and every class) and you would be sent back to the world you were previously on. Some towns wouldn't have raids, and some would have different mobs and bosses depending on where they are.
What do you think? In the poll, there are some more ideas for it that could work. Do you think they would?

The only reason why swarms existed in the first place were to be a good source of XP for players trying to hit 75. Pre-Gavel, swarms made a lot of sense because there were basically zero quests past 65 and no good way to grind the last 10 levels, but as of now there are more than enough ways to get XP and wars are functionally identical to how swarms used to be. Swarms just don't have a place in the game anymore.

I can't say I have fond memories of swarms; I only ever managed to finish one with without being kicked or the server (or in one case my PC) crashing.

While they could potentially work like guild wars do now to solve some lag issues, and while mob related lag has gotten better since making it less of an issue in general, there's no real improvement over grinding or doing dungeons at this point.

Your suggestion does offer some rewards and a boss to make it more interesting, but it feels like it would just be a repeatable grindfest unless they made a bunch of unique bosses, which seems like a lot of effort for such a small feature.

Issues aside, something like this, with a swarm of strong mobs and a creative boss that gives some decent rewards would be pretty nice. A fun challenge like LI, but with a more useful reward.

Max level when swarms were a thing was 70.
They were removed with the update that made max level 75.

In 1.10 the level cap was raised to 75 and in 1.12.1 swarms were updated so I don't think you're right about that.
    https://wynncraft.gamepedia.com/Version_History

They were removed when the level cap was raised to 100 with Gavel, not 75.

    I was around pre-gavel, a full 2 years before gavel. I had 3 level 75s.
Allow me to say, no, they were not removed in gavel, they were removed before that.

Idk what to tell you man, the wiki says they've been gone as of 1.12.

Wiki also says level cap was raised to 75 in Oct 2013 and there's a video made by Hippie in June 2014 where he does a swarm in Almuj so again, pretty sure you're wrong. You can keep disagreeing, but all the recorded proof says otherwise.

Also, this thread from the forums makes it fairly clear they were removed with Gavel

"Well on the beta they were testing swarms but they were still buggy and extremely laggy! I think they had like one or two swarms when they had released the gameplay update but even then it was buggy so I guess they stopped it then so they can still work on it. For now, grinding and questing will have to be the way you get your exp until swarms are fully fixed which who knows how long could be."

Finally, I too was around pre-Gavel, so that's really a moot point. In fact, I joined six years ago, just like you. Crazy coincidence I must say.

I originally said level cap when swarms were around was 75 and he claimed level 70 was the level cap when swarms were removed, which can't be true since the level cap was raised to 75 long before that happened. It can't be the case that swarms were both removed at 70 and be around at 75.

Gavel is updated on 2015.12.20 and this thread exists. Swarm isn't removed at the same time with Gavel update

    uhh and

They brought swarm back after Gavel update once just for test, but it was laggy and then it's abandoned forever

    Simply

Level 75 cap -> Swarm Removed -> Gavel ayy -> Attempt of bringing swarm back -> nuuuu laggggg i quit

btw wynn can run something like The Eye boss fight or guild war but why is it still lagging with swarm?

    whatever whatever
can we just talk about this suggestion?

I did say that the mobs would be different depending on the area, making them sort of unique. Like, Ragni and Detlas would just have Bak'al, Nemract would have some forsaken legion dude, if Selchar was included they could have some kraken thing (seeing as the kraken has been mentioned by Seaskipper before), Almuj could have a sandstorm for its swarm, and the boss is the heart of the sandstorm, Nesaak would have a thing called a Ravaging Spirit for its boss because of the house of Twain, and Lusuco could have a more icy boss, like a frost giant or something. I'm not sure about some places in gavel, but maybe Ahmsord could have a dragon, maybe Lexdale could have a better version of Naragath who is less likely to be camped and is a giant zombie, representing the full body of his hand, maybe Llevigar and Cinfras could have the Parasite of light? I don't know.

Wiki says as of 1.12 so I guess I confused that for meaning at the same time as Gavel when in reality is was the/a version before Gavel like you said. Thanks for clearing things up <3

As for swarms, I think the reason why they were so laggy was *probably* because they were not implemented in an efficient way. That's just my guess, but the fact that wars work without being too laggy strongly suggests to me that there is a way to make them work, but again I don't really see a point since wars exist.

The difference between guild wars and swarms is that swarms have mobs that are multiple different levels so everybody has a chance to get some kills, whilst wars are just a billion bob reincarnations.

Part of your suggestion is making them 90+ though?

Also, having lots of different leveled mobs doesn't mean lower level players can participate. If there's even one high level mob basically no low level players can participate since they'll get OHKO'ed. Imagine being level 30 and thinking going into a area with level 100 mobs to get a few tough kills on level 30 mobs is a good idea. All throwing low level mobs into the mix will do is add some easy mobs to kill for the high level players. The only way to make swarms work/make sense is to make them the exact same as wars and if they're just wars then there isn't really a point to having them when you can just go and do wars.

As for rewards, the rewards you get from an activity should be unique to the activity you did. Dungeons have dungeon shops where you can chose your drop, quests have fixed rewards and good xp, and loot running gives good loot (hopefully). If you want the reward to be fabled armor and weapons then one, why would I not go loot running instead? and two, that would defeat the point of fabled items. Fabled items are supposed to be really hard to get, so if there's an activity which consistently drops them they would be no different then legendary items. If you want the reward to be xp, questing and running dungeons exist, both of which can easily get you to 103 (soon to be 105) already. The game does not need a new source of xp.

Swarms were around long after the 75 cap...

I guess you were right about the removal of them with Gavel since they were removed between 1.12 and Gavel but that was never really the point.
