Suggestion: every certain length of time wearing armour you get a small amount of armouring / tailoring xp, as if you are occasionally studying it and noticing things about how it was made, its structure etc. and every time you use a weapon you have a chance of gaining prof xp for its respective profession, also as if you are studying how it could have been made, its structure etc. This would encourage crafting as it would reduce some of the grind, and would be fairly realistic as someone who is around something alot would notice aspects of it.

The wearing armor part would just give everyone permanent passive xp gain tho...

This seems too strong, especially the armor suggestion as people would just afk farm xp, unless the gain were minuscule it could work. I do think there should be other ways to get xp instead of just crafting useless items. Perhaps you could receive xp for scrapping non-crafted items (taking them apart to understand how they work), naturally the formula for xp gain would have to be so that scrapping items won't give as much xp if you're prof level is lower than the item.

I think to make armor xp work, make it so whenever you take damage wearing the armor you gain xp.

Also, I think I can clarify the suggestion to be: Using profession items gives you xp.

Basically items created by professions that you made would give you profession xp when you use it. Eating your own food would increase cooking, using profession gear and such.
For the gear xp, I think it would be based off of the durability lost, rarity of the ingredients used, and level of said gear.

With this version, you can't just afk to gain gear xp. However, I guess you could afk xp if you let yourself constantly be damaged by weaker mobs to break armor then use scrap to fix it but that's a lot of scrap imo.

H0y improved my idea, I admit my original mechanics were broken but I think it is a good concept. :D thanks for the comment though!
