I slide him five silver and open up a jar, checking.

I believe it was a common thing that lots of DM's use mean merchants.

I've dealt with unhappy shopkeepers irl it sucks.

 

Well then those people are stupid because then you won't come back, most shopkeepers I'll use are smart enough to understand that.

Usually a good tactic to get them to be nice is just to walk away, then they'll suddenly know English and stop speaking French.
