World Decay Revamp

Note: I will be taking parts of this from this thread by @Dr Zed 's thread right here. https://forums.wynncraft.com/threads/gavel-revamp.214985/ credits to him if I use his ideas.

Spoiler: Decay

So here's my version of the Decay:

Before 1 AP, the Elves had been in touch with the Realm of the Light, the Light told them of what they were, their planes of existence, and what the Darkness was. The Elves soon knew that Light had been at war with Darkness for thousands of years, and Gavel was tied with the Light Realm. If they followed the pure and good path that Light had followed, the forces of Darkness would grow weaker whilst Light grew stronger as it's bond with it's province was held high, and soon Darkness would creep back and Light would spread across the world, bringing eternal peace and justice. The one who had talked with them and explained the ways to them was named "Entia", their new patron god. Entia was a powerful being from the Realm of the Light who lived highly above all beings. But she was no tyrant or queen. She loved all beings equally, never passing by a chance to help someone, she was a representation of a good person who did good things for everyone. She taught the Elves magic, good deeds, and how to live to make Light stronger.

The Elves were fine with this sort of living, true; the ways of greed and sin were tempting, but they knew it was for the greater good, for if they did not, the world would fall and end. But all other races in Gavel, especially most villagers (save the Bantisu, they are actually pure and good IIRC) did not care about the higher realms. As long as they were living a high, kingly life, they did not care about anything or anyone. They were greedy by nature, and they loved it. This disrupted the Light Realm, the worst things that could possibly happen within the province of Light were happening. The villagers were fattened by greed, so were other races. Everything was a joke to them if it didn't involve money or riches.

The Elves took it upon themselves to wipe out anybody who did not follow their ways, they banished greedy and sinful people, the only ones who could ever come into their towns had to be greedless and show this by passing difficult tests. This angered the villagers, they thought they could go and live wherever they wanted! What the elves thought didn't care! The Aldorei Valley had riches in them that they wanted, and they would get.

The exiled and greedy elves were angry too that they were kicked out of their homes. They taught the other races magic and prepared to march on Aldorei...

Until something terrible happened. On the day of the attack, just as the clock striked 12:00 AM, on 0 AP (New Years), their greed, disparity, and sin had grown so strong that Orphion himself was becoming defiled! He could not keep a grip on Gavel during that time, neither could he keep out the Darkness inside the province and in his own realm. Shadow took this chance and shot through the Realm of the Light. Dark entities brought Succoru eggs, as well as a serpent, which would be planted within the province of Gavel and cause it to slowly die until Light could not hold onto it. The violent clashes inside the Light Realm brought corruption and death everywhere. The Realm of Darkness now had easy access to the Province of Light and The Realm of the Light itself. An earthquake struck the land from Olux all the way to Ahmsord, and the province's days began to be counted by the Darkness.

However, on this same day, at the same time that the earthquake struck, a pickaxe struck a piece of green stone, behind this green stone was a purple light, upon more excavating, there was a large portal of immense proportions. It lead into a desolated realm of even more green stone....

A new, dark force spread throughout the province, it's root's spreading through the swamp, the Dark Forest, and the Kander Forest in the same manner as the Corruption did, the snake that caused this force was called a Sapila (Greek for Rot), and it worked quickly, it didn't take long to see the effects. Plants began to wilt and die, animals began to turn into powerful and dark beasts, as well as new and terrible monsters sprouting from everywhere. The attack on Aldorei had to be canceled, this was far more important at the moment.

In five years time (5 AP), Gavel was beginning to die. The tables turned during the Light and Dark war, Darkness spread corruption through the Realm of the Light and tainted Gavel as well, the magical influence began to fall as the province's defenses against Darkness became weaker, and insane things began to happen. Some blamed the elves, saying that the Elves created the Decay, and they knew how to fix it, some thought it was a curse, others said that they should've listened to the elves and figured out that their greed would turn into something terrible. The Elves said it was Entia's doing (despite it actually being Orphion getting fucked up).

But during this time Aldorei had amped up it's defenses, it was the purest place in all of Gavel (besides the Taproot and the Light's Secret) and Light was especially strong there. They would not let ANYBODY who would dare taint their town into the valley. With no response from the elves, during 533 AP, the province sought out the most powerful being in the world at the time (as they knew of) and the greatest sorceress in the world; Qira, The Mistress of The Hive. They requested her that she attempt to eradicate the Decay of the forests. But Qira saw something in the Realms, she knew that Darkness had access to the Realm of Light and the province, The Decay was small stuff compared to the force in the Wynn Province that she had caught wind of and the even more mysterious force in a far off dark land.. then she saw something, it was a beast of the night, and it was a threat to all. It would soon come to Gavel, and every other realm in existence would wage war with each other. The Decay mattered nothing compared to it. She declined their offer, and threatened to destroy every single villager alive if they dare ask her again.. She needed to create an army of her own to prepare for this war, if she didn't she would be completely annihilated without her own legion and army to fight alongside Light.

With Qira and the Elves out of the question, the races of Gavel turned to... dark arts. They, at the time, knew nothing of the decay, nor the Light, so they apparently thought the most cruel and darkest ways would cure the Decay (despite it being the opposite). Summoning was the most common art, they preformed cruel rituals to summon items from beyond the world. Sometimes riches came out, or potions that could bring plants back to life, or knowledge, however usually it was beasts of unimaginable might that had to be killed by legions themselves. The truth was, none of the Villagers truly understood the summoning ritual. The ritual could easily be channeled to specifically target somewhere to grant them something, but this was not known to the villagers, either way; the worst that ever happened was the beasts. However, on one occasion, a villager accidentally messed up in their ritual, the flaw caused a plague from the Realm of Darkness to be summoned and infect the villager. Afterwards the demonic plague spread throughout Gavel, killing thousands upon thousands, easily decimating the population of Gavel. Qira was once again called upon to cure this plague in 690 AP, and once more she declined. But she did however, send them back with a riddle; "If you cannot defeat something, contain it." A priest named Yansur took her advice in 700 AP, and caught the Demonic Plague in a helmet, then placed a binding talisman on it to keep it trapped forever within it. At this point the Mistress was proud of someone listening to her and sent a crate of elixirs that would cure the rest of the townsfolk that still had symptoms to every major town in Gavel. (This crate however just dealt with the symptoms, the Black Plague itself would not be cured by these potions, if you are wondering why she didn't just give them out before). This priest was taken in by the Mistress on 701 AP, and the Gavel population began to recover.

The Villagers grew desperate, the Decay was becoming worse than ever before, everything in it's area was dying, and their poor riches were beginning to disappear! So in 901 AP, they sailed across the ocean in 3 patterns in an attempt to cure the Decay. The first Envoy became lost in a storm and crashed near the Dudgon Islands. The second one headed to the southern corner of the world, to Fruma. They begged the province at it's doorstep, all of the Royal Council in Fruma knew that the Queen could very well cure it with her immense magic, however the Queen would not dare travel outside of Fruma in case a rebellion would happen while she was gone, and there was no way she would give the villagers her sacred and precious magic. Corkus was no use either, they did want to help, but electromagic was useless against the dark and primal force, however they did give them some directions; The Wynn Province's hero had recently appeared and showed magic unseen by anyone before, perhaps there were others inside the province who could help remedy against the Decay, possibly cure it.

So they had sailed a short day to where Maltic was beginning to be started up and met with the third Envoy. and from there it goes as how the original lore planned it out.

aight so that's how I'd do the Decay instead of just "oh the villagers greed y'know it made a parasite then it went into the ground and made shit die lolololol". now it's much more fleshed out and thought into while still retaining the original idea.

Also I made sure to completely flesh out everything so that everybody perfectly understood it, of course some things would be hidden from plain sight, but here in the suggestions thread you need to know everything and understand it for you to make a good judgement on my revamp; thus the wall of text.​

It’s pretty good. It’s pretty coherent with the current lore so I don’t see any problem with it. Good job.

 

Orphion wasn't infected at 0 AP, more like 900

 

I said I was revamping it. In my story, the deceit, sin, and greed in Gavel was so great that Orphion was becoming defiled and corrupted, and he could not keep a good grip on Gavel during that time, which gave easy access from other realms that Light defended Gavel from, the earthquake struck the province and from there sprouted darkness which began to infiltrate entities, villagers, and even the forests (However, compared to the Thanatos, this was small stuff) then the Realm of Shadow came into both the Realm of Light and Gavel, then planted the Thanatos in The Kander Forest, which caused the Decay.

The corruption of Orphion in my story was a FAR slower process. Around 950 AP is when he turned.

Yes I suspected that when I first looked over my draft of it. However I decided my goal with it was that it would still retain a lot of the original idea, while walking a bit south of the Corruption and adding new ideas.

Thanatos usually is considered to also be a Greek personofication of death, the god Thanatos, and I always considered Death from Beyond the Grave as a being like Thanatos, as Death reaps all the souls of the mortals and takes them to the afterlife, so that's kinda weird, unless you decide to change the lore of Beyond the Grave. Death from that quest also seem to know about some sort of Great War coming, and he has a giant hourglass showing until when the world will exist and the war will start.

 

yeah but thanatos is also the greek word for death (accent mark on the second a)
major greek gods weren't synonymous with their element/connection (poseidon =/= ocean, zeus =/= thunder, etc) but minor gods were sometimes the same word (thanatos = death, snow = chioni (khione))

Hades is death??? Athanatos means immortal A = Not or un
Thanatos means Mortal or death

 

no he's not, he's like the personification of the afterlife

 

Hades is the lord of the underworld
Thanatos is Death (he makes sure that when people die they actually die)

Since thanatos means death, they are using "a" as a prefix to mean "not"
therefore, athanatos means "not death" or immortality

 

perhaps off topic, but on top of guiding souls to afterlife he'll also kill you with puns :p

 

I changed the name to Sapila, it means ROT in greek.
