Isn’t stats supposed to be the math for people who don’t do math

It has a symbol for 1, and then 2-3 is just repeating the symbol the symbol (II = 2, III = 3). A new symbol is introduced for 5, and the symbol for 4 has that 5 symbol and the one symbol to the left (V:5, IV:4).

And then you can add the one symbols to the right of the five symbol to get the symbol for their sum (VI = 6, VII = 7, VIII = 8). And then there is a new symbol for 10, and the symbol for 9 is the 10 symbol with the one symbol to the left of it (X = 10, IX = 9). And there is a separate symbol for 50. And there is a separate symbol for 100.
