Wynntheory: The Bigger Picture! Was It Real?

Welcome to another WynnTheory, where today we find out the secrets
behind "The Bigger Picture". Let's get into it!

In the quest "The Bigger Picture", Psilo hires you take care of a Razorice Rat infestation in his home by retrieving a sleeping mushroom by the name of "Subtraxerim Utilsum". However, Subtraxerim Utilsum has a different effect on humans than it does on Gnomes. So today, we're going to find out what Subtraxerim Utilsum really is.​

What Are You Experiencing?



In the quest, as stated above, you run into a mushroom that gives you the sensation of shrinking into nothingness. I am here to tell you that what you are experiencing is not the type of "magic" you're used to in Wynncraft. Alice In Wonderland Syndrome (AIWS) is a disorienting neurological condition that effects human perception. Common symptoms of AIWS are:
​

• Objects appear to be of the wrong size or shape, or distances are perceived inaccurately; for example, a small hallway may actually appear to be never-ending or the ceiling may seem to to be very close in distance to the floor (this can cause someone to feel like the room is caving in on him or her).​
• The person's body image is distorted (i.e. the head or hands appear much larger than they really are).​

What Causes Those Experiences?

Alice in Wonderland Syndrome is most commonly caused by migraines, brain tumors, schizophrenia, Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, and can be one of the initial symptoms of the Epstein-Barr Virus (the most well-known cause of Mononucleosis). The condition can also be brought on by using hallucinogenic drugs, such as LSD, marijuana, and Psilocybin mushrooms (also known as 'magic mushrooms').

Mushroom's Real Life Equivalent?



So we know that AIWS is most likely what we are experiencing in game, and that it can be caused by Psychedelic Mushrooms. But which kind? Well the description of the mushroom in the game is a large, color-changing mushroom with a white residue on the cap. The problem is, there are no "color-changing" psychedelic mushrooms out there. However, I believe you could have been experiencing the LSD effects of the shroom while you were getting near it. This is entirely possible because of the fact that every time Psilo tries to get near the mushroom to collect, the mushrooms "sleeping spores" cause him to fall asleep. In the same way, while you were getting near the shroom, the equivalent to an "LSD spore" to humans was slowly tripping you out. It did not trigger AIWS, because, just like Psilo said,"since you're so big, you won't fall asleep". The spores aren't strong enough to trigger a full on "trip" for someone of your size.

Now that we revealed the mushroom could be any color, we just have to find out what mushroom exactly it is. The shroom most commonly associated with AIWS is the "Amanita Muscaria".



This mushroom is known for it's white veil underneath the cap, white material on the cap, and, of course, psychedelic effects on the brain. That's right everyone; Wynncraft is less magic, and more "magic". And the entire quest was just a psychedelic trip. But hey! That's just a theory. A WynnTheory!

I saw the beginning of the title and thought you were gonna talk about a giant Wynn conspiracy or something. Nope...

But anyway, nice work. I myself am not a drug expert like you (sorry, had to) so I can't really put in any thoughts myself, but it seems like a match!

There's a number of rather large holes in this theory...


1) Psilo himself references that you've shrunken. And that you killed the Razorice, which were hiding in the walls. So how could you have hit them in what turned out to be such a cramped space without destroying his home?
2) The Regular Zombie deals 1 damage at most. If you were just running around in the house at full size, you wouldn't have been taking damage from...anything, really, least of all the Razorice. Also, fall damage and death.
3) The Subtraxerim Utilsum mushroom constantly changes colors. So it can't be an Amanita Muscaria, especially since the basic Red Mushroom would appear to be this. The mushroom would have to stay consistently red with white patches on the cap, which it certainly does not.

How, exactly, is that relevant?

 

alright alright, call it stage two of AIWS

 

1. Psilo has been living around several different types of these mushrooms his entire life. It would make sense that he occasionally suffers from the same symptoms.

2. Psilo tells us that these Razorice are common in our province. So all of the rats we see in Wynn? Razorice. Assuming your level 76 when you start the quest, I know plenty of high level rats in the Wynn Province that can damage you quite a bit if you're not careful. I avoided the Giant Zombie so I wouldn't know if there was much of a difference in damage. Also, fall damage is a game mechanic. They can enlarge everything or shrink everything but fall damage will still be there regardless. It could be intentional, it could be unintentional. And just for the fun of it, there is a thing called a "bad trip" where you are put in scary instances/pain.

3. I already explained why the mushroom would be changing colors, please re-read.

EDIT: Also if you're like @Tantibus and are wondering why the house isn't completely trashed, well that would cause quite the paradox. If you were supposed to see a trashed house after your trip, then other people who haven't started the quest yet would also see a trashed house. That means when you shrink in the house you'd have to see a trashed house too. Easier to not have any inconsistencies.

Keep in mind, this whole thing is just for fun. I know that it wasn't actually a drug trip you went on. But it is a possibility.

As a sufferer of migraines myself, I can say that my vision is affected whilst having one; though I've rarely had instances where I've felt my ceiling is attempting to crush me. The most I've had is my door being slightly further away/closer than I'd expected.

Though it's interesting to hear there's actually syndrome named after Alice in Wonderland.
