Uhh alright, this will be a theory mostly based on the Point of No return dialogue rewrite, lore conversations and my own thoughts,
Fruma raised some big questions, specifically about the player.
The theory is gonna be split into 4 major parts: multiple rounds of evidence collection, proven principles and basic theory, analysis on what it means, and analysis on the specifics with some speculation on the causes and ramifications.
    Part 1: Intro

    The Dilemma

it all goes back to what makes us, the player, so special.
Two first raises this fact in Ensemble of Hope with the bottomless well dialogue:

A common theory is that this is related to whatever the inquisitors did to us when they made us forget our past.
The only issue with that is it didn't explain the difference between us and the average recruit.

The only time we delve into this emptiness is in Apotheosis. Hinting there is more to the story.
Before we move on. I want to raise awareness to the melody and "our soul" knowing it well.

    Next is Anathemas dialogue
    [IMG]
The key words here are "great lengths were taken to hide this from me" and "a familar spark"

These were all the clues needed to set a wide range of theories going. Now I think there is enough evidence to solve some mysteries, but also create new ones.

    Back to happy town
It turns out a lightly bugged quest from 2019 got a dialogue rework. In my opinion, the only justification for a dialogue rework is if old lore about the soul or orphions involvement in happy Lutho was contradictory to the new canon. So any major differences are likely key points of lore that devs believed completely threw the canon out of track. So the next piece of evidence collection will be reviewing these differences.

Point of No Return OG emphasized this big decision and point of disagreement between the player and their soul. In that quest we learn to treat our soul with more respect and that our soul is kind of a different entity than us.
The new point of no return removes any semblance of decision the player or their soul ever had in staying in happy Lutho or not.

    OG PONR
    [IMG]
New PONR. All mention of decision is gone.

It also changes the final dialogue with the player ghost.

Key words here are "they" and "I am you"
    "A trap"

The soul continues to vague post on what happened to us on the past. the soul references the Queen and The Dark. Its not clear the exact procedure of what happened
    [IMG]
PLAYER BEAST THEORY IS DEAD! Or... is it?

but one minute, how can we have this great power spoken by anathema but just be a regular human? all will be revealed in due time
    [IMG]
To summarize, the player used to be a whole human with a soul. Whether they were a fully regular human is up to question. Something happened that put us in a one of a kind opportunity, more drastic than the other recruits who were mind wiped. Furthermore, we have played the entire game split and seperate to our soul. In point of no return, this separation means that Orphions soul collection trap(which we will be getting into later) allows us to leave Lutho without our soul.
Key words are: I will be lost once more, You have lived, built yourself anew, I have long been lost to you already

    Part 2: Soul and Spark
What is a soul? This is the hardest question of the theory. Every game interprets the meaning of a soul differently, I'm going to set some criterion for how our soul will work based on the things we know it has to do.
Some of these principles might be true for everyone, but some might only be true for us because we are special. Idk the only person's soul the game talks about is ours.

    Soul criteria:
    1. Souls are metaphysical - PONR proves that soul is the mind as the citizens have no direction, no goals, no thoughts, no souls.
Additionally: talking about souls, Death says that they linger there and eventually their memories fade. This supports souls have something to do with mind.

    2. Living without your soul is possible - Point of no return proves this. This one is def true for everyone.

    3. A souls absence is the same, no matter the severity - The leaving of our soul in point of no return does not change the players state in any way compared to when our Soul was only separate from us before point of no return. The soul even describes that this will not change anything when it says " you have lived", "I have long been lost to you already "

    4. Souls can have their own thoughts, knowledge, and strength- the melody line from apotheosis and PONR prove this. This one is true for everyone as the citizen souls speak in PONR.
We know that different souls have different strengths and Death even says every soul is different in its ability to see the realm.

    5. Souls change and have an affect on a person - A Hunters Calling is dubiously canon yet AHC has the strongest evidence for this.
also the fact the last reward is the corrupted soul token. once again I'm not going to look too deeply into AHC for other criteria but the stuff directly mentioned in Fruma and PONR cannot be contradicted by this quest too much. Its clear our soul changes in this quest and that is canon.
Additionally in PONR the soul says that "I am you" and talks about changes in personality of the player, meaning the soul did have impacts on the player.
The soul cycle also proves this, but we will be getting into that later...

    6. The player exhibits soul like properties and has knowledge from our past soul even if the player doesn't have one - this is one of the biggest claims. In soul dialogue in PONR the soul says it has been a long time since we have "lost all that we were". The soul is referencing themselves and so its clear we have lost our personality. SS below proves that even in PONR we had a personality(even though we were split from our soul). And even though we are split from our soul post PONR we still have a personality as Fruma proves. So how can we have a personality in Fruma and a sense of self, without our soul?
Even then we are "still ourselves" (this will come in handy later)

Furthermore, in the melody scene we learn that the soul knows our melody. Since PONR was a post Fruma rework, this means it is fully canon and after losing our soul, we went to Fruma and were still able to access our soul's knowledge. Well we know our soul has definetly left us in PONR and even then we had our own self before PONR separate from our isolated soul.
Since a isolated soul is the same as non existence of the soul, this means our sense of self and personality throughout the game can only be explained if we had a working soul on both of those occasions.
But if we have a normal soul like everyone else how does that explain our emptiness? we will come back to this later but to me its clear that something is not only exhibiting soul like properties in the player, we can also still access part of our past souls knowledge

    7. Souls(or something...?) have desirable power - this one is also a general principle. In orphions soul trap, the soul talks about how the soul/mind is kept safe while the body falls prey to the roots and trees. The soul is referencing the tree inside the obelisk
    [IMG]
Supporting evidence for the isolation of souls: [IMG]
Death says souls are being lost and he cannot find them. These are souls in Saphanis's grasp and souls in happy Lutho.
So Orphion is separating the body from the soul/mind yet he is not using the soul to fuel the tree, he is using the citizen's bodies. Yet we know Saphanis does gain from souls so its clear that Soul/mind have power but so does life force
more evidence that "life force" has power is how Krolton gains from peoples "life force" when it kills them.

    8. Spark is its own principle
Spark is mentioned 3 times that I know of. The first time is when Anathema dies. The second time is when Anathema says we have a familar spark. Not only do we not have a soul, our Soul says it is normal and so why would Anathema be impressed by what she saw in us EVEN if she was somehow able to look at our soul?

To conclusively prove this tho, we'll be going over project hallowground in fort Hegea and death dialogue.
To set the stage, the Queen is running out of changeling supplies and Sovereign Selium has a solution. He will imbue the changeling spark of life himself
    [IMG]
The primordial life of the changelings is their spark
    [IMG]
Selium finally succeeds in lighting their spark and whatever he is doing has a completely different tone then anything related to souls. The madness is questionable but could be explained from issues related to their soul or spark and the harmony between the two.
We'll be getting more into soul + spark later but understand that spark is something different than soul and parts of life that the soul dictate may not be the parts of life that the spark dictates.
I have more evidence these are different things but they are confusing without going over other stuff first so you will mainly have to trust me they are different and later you will fully agree they are.

    9. Spark and Soul must be together unless...
This information comes from death dialogue
    [IMG]
this is talking about general Takan and death is talking about what would happen if the corruption took the soul also. This is interesting because death mentions this is only a concern if the corruption targets the body before the spark flickers out. This means the soul can only naturally leave the body after the death of a spark.

    10. soul and spark can only be separated by realm beasts. We'll get into what a spark does later but its clear we still have one or we would be dead. Death says its not normal to enter the realm of death with your spark. So this means the natural way of splitting a spark from a soul is the process of death overseen by Death.
Death doesen't actually have the power to split the spark from the soul, he just waits for the spark to flicker as the dialogue in principle 9 proves.
Since we don't have a soul it means our spark and soul were separated. The soul blames the dark and corruption for our split and in PONR we learn the Orphion is splitting peoples body from their soul/mind. Even though light, dark, and war are forces of nature, these are unnatural ways of splitting the spark from the soul. Only realm beasts have the power to do this

Finally, based on this information we can postulate what a spark and soul is.
Claim: Soul is mind/metaphysical force, spark is nature/life force. Together inside of a body they form a life
8/7/26 edit: Death has straight up confirmed this now but I will still claim my "I figured it out first" ticket.
When Orphion does his trap he is collecting energy from the spark and keeping the soul safe. He needs to separate the two in order to collect them. Orphion doesen't need metaphysical force to keep the Lutho tree alive, he only needs life force: spark
When Anathema dies she loses her spark.
Anathema is impressed by our spark, not our soul, she is impressed by our "nature", our "nature" is familar to her.

    Part 3: Mirror
    [IMG]
When you look into a mirror, what do you see? You see yourself, but you never see your entire self. The same principle applies here, a soul will never see a spark and a spark will never see a soul. A life will not see any.
Its why our soul can't exactly place how exactly we've changed and it can't quite understand why we are still similar to what we once were. We still have a semblance of our original spark, our original nature.

    In the fruma ARG:
We delve into our mind. Our soul and see the room where we were separated from our soul. We remember this because whatever happened here also impacted our spark, our spark remembers it. The mirror is broken because we have no soul(which we established in the beginning), there is nothing to look at.

But... if we don't have a soul how can we access these memories. How can we even have direction and thoughts?

To start, do we know of any other creatures that can live and can think and can remember without a soul? Remember spark dictates one nature and so the only things in the game that would only have a spark are ones purely from nature.
There is no soul to light, there is no soul to dark, and there is no soul to war. Why would there be? they are forces of nature. These are pure spark beings and something in their spark allows them to live and feel and direct without a soul.
When Anathema says she sees a familar spark, she is saying a spark that is familar in that way, one that is different and stands on its own. What exactly our spark can do remains to be seen.
This is not the fully story and the bigger specifics of our spark(the same type of spark realm beasts have) will be explored in part 4.

We are not a realm beast, we had a soul in the past, but we might potentially be representative of a force of nature like a realm beast.

When we enter the bottomless well in Apotheosis we can't access the energy from our soul yet we can access our spark.
The color and energy and life coming in Apotheosis is from our spark and the mourning melody is from our spark. The spark yearns for a full soul, yet whatever happened to it means it will never be able to reconnect with a soul again.

    TL;DR 1:
Spark and soul are different things. We have no soul, yet our spark is special and can stand without a soul

This still doesen't fully explain why we know the melody is familiar to the soul and how we can transport to the ARG room from our memories. The specifics of our spark explain this though
How exactly is our spark different? lets get into it

    Part 4: Essence
    [IMG]
This part will be fully based on the new Beyond the Grave dialog rework. Unlike the last part where we made a speculation(one that makes sense) on the sparks of the realm beasts, there is no major speculation here as death explains everything pretty well.

In the quest, the monster canonically kills us yet death does not allow us to pass on, he says there is a issue with our spark.
To understand what he is saying here we must go over Death's day to day operations and what he does for the world.

Talking about commander takan, Death hints he needs to wait for someones spark to fully flicker before he can transport their soul to the domain of death. They come to his domain with only their soul. This supports that spark = life force.
This confirms Death only deals with souls and mentions the "soul being reduced to the essentials" before returning to the cycle. So there is a reincarnation cycle that entails someones soul(their memory and mind) being reduced down to "essence", the parts of what makes a soul a soul.
While possibly some parts of the original soul remain, this new essence should generally allow a new clean soul to form and grow and change. Since everyone starts with no memories this is supported which also supports principle 5(souls change and have a affect on a person)

So why is us being in Death's realm with a spark such a problem? Well death can't recycle our soul while the spark is still in it. He could try but it would lead to a life without a soul which is the same morality as orphions soul siphoning trap. Death is a good guy and so he allows us an opportunity to return to life.

Why are we able to smuggle our spark into death's realm?
Death says: "It has imprinted yourself into your very essence... How has this come to pass? Could it have been..."
This means our spark/"nature"/life force has fused into the reduced pieces of our soul/mind/metaphysical force

This means our spark and soul are not only seperate, but that part our soul was "damaged" and reduced leading to a weird coalescing with the spark.
After the incident, the non-reduced remains of our soul were not part of the equation of life anymore for us.

This would explain our ability to remember the room where we where mind wiped, it would explain our emptiness as we don't have a working soul, it would explain our ability to know the soul knows the melody, and it would explain our souls separation from us.

    What is the incident?
Based on this we can make a step by step hypothesis:
    1. the memory wipe usually modifies the soul, it does not split it.
    2. Our soul was powerful enough that is resisted the wipe more than usual, leading to such a strong exertion on our soul that it - at least partly - tore to its essential pieces
    3. Our spark in a desperate attempt to live imbued itself into these essential pieces
    4. this lead to successful memory wipe but a plethora of side effects

A interesting thing is that a spark imbued into essence is the familar thing that Anathema saw.
Now it is possible these realm beasts are forces of nature/spark imbued with the essentials of metaphysical force, making them the incarnations of certain natural forces.
I like that theory and is the best one we have currently on the origin of realm beasts and it makes sense because life = soul + spark. Forces of nature + unique essentials of a soul could make something very powerful.

Why us and what's derns involvement? I don't know but this theory is done as it makes a plausible evidence based explanation for the uniqueness of the player and the theoretical process that could've caused it.
Why this happened to us and who did this to us can't really be explained yet.

    Quick speculation
    1. Saphanis's rise in power coincides with Bob. Maybe saphanis took bob's soul or spark?
    2. Power within comes from both the soul and spark
    3. Orphion thinks we are dead as we lost our soul in PONR
    4. Right before she died, Anathema believed we hid our true nature from her. She thought we took the "great lengths"
    5. "It has imprinted itself into your very essence... how has this come to pass? could it have been..." Based on no evidence, I'm predicting, dern is somehow involved.
    6. death has a counterpart(life) as there needs to be something that imbues the spark of life into a body.
    7. Death is either a pure soul or pure spark being.
    8. in deraj prision expect to see some references to lutho esque prisoners
    9. Changelings are spark imbued with the essence of a soul and that was the missing piece Selium missed when they tried to bring them to life.

    Changelog:
    8/7/26 Beyond The Grave rework
    reworded the spark definition
reworded principle 9(who can separate the soul and spark)
Turned principle 9 into principle 10
added a new principle 9: Spark and Soul must be together
    added speculation #5
    added speculation #6
    Added part 4
Reworded principle 5 title because it might have been confused with the definition of a spark.
    Added speculation #7
    Added speculation #8
    Added speculation #9
added more evidence in a multitude areas from the Beyond the Grave quest

    Postword:

The new patch didn't change anything about my original theory apart from the finer details and provided tons of new info for more specifics on what makes our spark unique which means I'm now confident on everything here thats not in the speculation list as there is good evidence for all of it.

If you have any additional evidence or counterpoints for anything here please send it
If you have any other potential explanations for anything part 3 and part 4 then share.
If you think any principles should be added, modified, or removed in part 2 then share that aswell because having a good base on what our soul and spark need to do and interact with each other is important.
Speculate on anything related to this theory! even if it can't be proven quite yet.

great theory so far but I assume you are referring to supernatural forces, not the wybels or wocs or something, cosmic has its own associations in the game (then again, you might be talking about this, and I might just be crazy)

okay wait this actually makes so much sense
i kinda assumed spark was a metanarrative nod to the player's playerhood, which i talked about... somewhere. i like this though

It didn't make sense to have a quest where you actively communed with your soul and not have the incredibly important elements be brought up, which is why it was rewritten

I feel like we're going to get more on this in Fruma part 2, since that'll have us visit the Wastelands where the Changeling project was based.

Soul, spark; mind, life-force. It makes sense. Reasonably arcane, but not out of the realm of an ordinary fantasy story's complexity. But how do we walk around without a soul? Surely we'd be mindless. But... well, we are, to a degree. The player character doesn't really have interiority. The interiority is us, the player.

...so, what happened? Some kind of deep magic was used to divide the soul and spark, with the soul cast off and lingering around us until it got trapped by Orphion in an optional quest, and the spark continuing to animate the body. Yet, an intelligence remained. Was the soul removed so that something else could take its place? And if so, did that thing only appear when the wagon was approaching Wynn?

And... why did this make us so powerful? Why is our spark distant from us? Is there something hidden within us? Some source of power? Why would an ordinary human have this put inside them?

Yeah these are the big questions, I tried to address a lot of these in the theory, but without fruma part 2 evidence there are multiple options.
For us not being mindless, the way I decided to go around this was by utilizing the part where Anathema said our spark was similar. The first thing people thought of were the realm beasts. I decided that was a good interpretation which led me to believe something in the players spark need to be similar to the realm beasts. In the theory I said that spark = nature. The realm beasts are really just forces of nature, so I decided that means they are forces of pure spark and no soul. Since they are not mindless, the players spark could be like theirs.

How this happened I have no way to figure out, but the game has been throwing hints at the room where we lost our memory. Our soul blames the dark and not just the queen which is interesting.

Our soul hints that it being left behind in Happy Lutho will not change anything about us. I interpreted that as even though our soul was still in us, we had effectively lost it even before PONR. This allows point of no return to technically not impact the canon.

I'd throw in that The Queen may not be wrong in stating that great lengths were taken to hide it from her; it could be her mistakenly believing that they were, or there could be more to it.

We don't know how or why our soul got separated, but we do know the consequences, some of them. While Anathema had power and could threaten mutually assured destruction if Orphion or Sephanis made a play for the physical world, they were stuck, unable to fulfill their goals. We change that by killing her.

Taking this thread as correct or very close to it, this is seemingly made possible by our nature as someone without a soul. I think it's safe to say that if someone was taking great lengths to hide something like us from The Queen, and was capable of doing so, it was very likely either a realm beast, or done at the behest of one. This tracks because they also are the two (?) entities who most benefit from us being hidden (we kill what is potentially the biggest thing stopping them from achieving their goals), and also are quite possibly the only two (?) entities who had the ability to do this to us.

I always interpreted that line as great lengths being taken to hide it just, in general.

I don't think either Realm Beast is responsible for our state. It would be an odd narrative choice, as it'd inherently polarise us in a story about how the two poles are bad. Also, we are a Fruman exile. I doubt either of them could sneak agents into Fruma. Two would be a likely candidate for how we were made, but if she was responsible then someone would have had to wipe her memory, given that she's the one who reveals the player's soul situation in the first place. Unlikely.

This is probably a Fruma-part-2+Dern question.

One thing I will re-emphasize is after asking our soul who did this to us, our soul will say "The world. The shadows. The crown."
The crown makes sense because our memories were wiped by them which could've caused this.
The shadows on the other hand is more questionable which is why it's possible Saphanis did this, but it could've just been some creature of dark that contributed.
Our soul is likely not all knowing but it does leave the door open for dern involvement.

Great lengths by who though? Us? As I said, it's possible that's what she means, but also isn't correct. Her incorrectly assuming we were hiding it seems unlikely given how much she knows at that point. There are no other known candidates who could go to those lengths, with the possible exception of Two, which also seems incredibly unlikely. The two beings with both the power and reason to do so, as the two beings who most benefited from it, seem like the best candidates.

I'm also gonna strongly dispute their ability to sneak agents into Fruma; I have little to no doubt that an agent of either would be able to get it if they were ordered to do so, based on the ease with which agents of The Queen are able to travel. Also, that implies that they weren't able to find an agent who was already there; considering that one of Anathema's previous Scions now serves Saphanis to some degree, it's evident that she doesn't have enough control over even the Sovereigns to ensure that none of them could be acting on behalf of either Realm Beast, much less other, random individuals who are largely below her notice. Two, Soosu, and Zhiraok all act outside of Her Majesty's knowledge at times, showing that the Sovereigns act on rather loose leashes and that The Queen is not aware of what they may be up to. It's possible that consorting with another Realm Beast would be something she would notice, but that's pure speculation. I also doubt it was a Sovereign; none of the ones we know of seem like a likely candidate, and it seems unlikely that it happened so long ago that a different Sovereign was still around. But some random person in Fruma? If I was intent on conquering the world, and the main thing between me and the ability to freely invade was a single individual, I would do everything in my power to get as many spies as possible into their kingdom as possible. Unless it's explicitly impossible for reasons that haven't been shown yet, I would imagine Fruma is home to a great deal of agents of both Realm Beasts.

Surely Realm Beasts have Influence-detection powers.

Orphion doesn't seem familiar with us when we show up in Gavel - though I don't remember the dialogue in the early stages of RoL exactly. If Saphanis made us, then that was a really shockingly bad plan.

No chance orphion was related as our soul specifically mentions the queen and the dark, no mention of the light.
The dark still could've influenced what happened to us but I don't really believe it was a plan from Saphanis because as you said, it would have been a shockingly bad plan.

On a side note: this theory survived a patch! new patch has tons of new lore and none of it goes against this theory with new beyond the grave lore actually supporting the theory from what I've seen.

I'm not sure where to find the rewritten Beyond the Grave, could you please share some of the important notes?

I made a edit at the end of the post going over some dialogue, if you want images, people are sharing them in the discord and I'm sure full dialogue will be in the wiki eventually.

Was it though? Anathema was their biggest obstacle, and we removed that. We might've freed Orphion from the parasite, but it's implied he's still significantly weaker and will take time to recover, time that Darkness can spread without significant opposition. Did we prevent Saphanis from achieving total victory? Yeah, if that was even possible to begin with, but from their perspective, they're in a much better place than they were before; we effectively handed them the material plane on a silver platter. Orphion is freed from the parasite, yes, but also isn't in a position to fight back against any advances made by the Dark, while the other thing keeping their advance in check is now dead by our hand. Even if Orphion being freed is a problem for them in the long run, their hands were still tied in an eternal stalemate and would have remained so for the foreseeable future if we hadn't killed Anathema. From their perspective, this is sacrificing one chess piece for another, much more valuable one. I would argue there literally isn't a better conclusion they could hope for besides us having not freed Orphion, thus moving them from a position of total domination to merely being massively more powerful.

Another thing to mention is that this very much fits Sephanis' MO; they never interact directly; they frequently make use of some agent who isn't under their direct control but who does their dirty work for them, like Bak'al. If they wanted Anathema dead (which I think they indisputably did), my number one bet for how they'd do it is to sway another one of her Scions (a Sovereign) to take actions to weaken her and to either put her in a position where she could be parasited or, given her status as a lesser Realm Beast and therefore, probably not able to fight back as effectively as Orphion, killed outright. Like, for instance, taking one of the people being exiled, changing them in a way that gave them a fighting chance against her, hiding them from her, and then setting them loose in a place where they would gain the skills necessary to do so knowing that they would have a grudge against her (even if that didn't matter in our experience). The risk is nonexistent, the investment of their power is most likely low or nonexistent, and the potential rewards are borderline infinite.

The one hole here is that Anathema thinks both Orphion and Saphanis overlooked this. It's possible she just doesn't realise this was done by a Dernic agent, but... I mean, she's Anathema, she's not *stupid*.

It also might be narratively unsatisfying to rug-pull the player by revealing that everything they did was actually Evil All Along...

ATP im only speculating but it is interesting to mention we don't know what the crime was that the player did to get memory wiped. I mean its easy to assume we were "cursed" like Tasim but not everyone wiped is cursed. It could be that our soul blames the dark because maybe we worked with the dark leading to our conviction or the dark in some other way lead to our conviction, not that they necessarily had a role in the process to change our spark.

Consider that if it was Dark related, and Anathema knew, she wouldn't say that they both overlooked you. She would probably curse you and Saphanis out for secretly scheming without her noticing and succeeding.

You must remember that she hates both of them, and both have reason to want to slime her out (Orphion literally covertly asks you to go shank her to death if you can)

Yeah that makes sense. Not sure if you know all the future lore already, but if you don't: Based on what the soul said I'm thinking the "shadows" must've had a more indirect involvement in whatever happened and no agent of dern purposefully did this to us.

Like culpitisntaword, I also wouldnt like it if it's revealed that through the entire game our actions have somehow been in some shadow master plan, so I don't think that's the case.
