    So it's been happening today.
The compass won't work unless I click immediately after the server starts,
Then the server times out when I try to join.
I tried turning off smooth lighting, clouds, changing the graphics to fast, and restarted it, but nothing has worked.

What's your ping for Wynncraft? If it's a high number like 500+ ms, then you're probably having connection problems and will have to wait until your ping goes down.

While you wait, try checking the speed of your internet and remove any applications that might be sapping the speed. Restarting your internet router may also help relieve the problem.

In order to see a server's ping, go to the Minecraft Multiplayer section (with the server list), look for the green bars to the right of the server, and hover your mouse over it. It should tell you a number followed by "ms". This is your ping, and higher pings have lower bar amounts, resulting in a bad or laggy connection.

I live in Australia, which may be the problem, but it never lagged like this, maybe the quality of my internet has gone down?

It also could be because of the double xp weekend and the heavy increase of people online. Because of the stress on the server by the 1000+ players online, it may be causing a lag that you (being in Australia) can't connect very well to.

I can predict that once this weekend is over, you'll probably have better connection. I've had heavy lag at times, but after a while it will return to normal.

The dxp weekend stopped, but it still doesn't work...
EDIT: I can join the worlds now, but with a lot of lag, I had to kill myself twice. It keeps saying "Item entity (number) has no item?!", and I'm in the jungle, which may be the cause of the Jungle Fetishes' projectiles.

My recommendation is that if you want to join a world, find one that has 20 or less players in it. Those tend to take less time to load, allowing you to get into the game quickly regardless of internet speed.

Just be aware that you may have a few lag spikes in the game as your internet/ping is struggling. Also, the Jungle can cause lag, but I'm not sure how the fetish projectiles could be causing it. Do you happen to be running any other mods besides Optifine?
