    The Curse

Marvin woke up, feeling like he was floating. He looked around, confused about how everything seemed in a shade of green. Then he realised that he was floating. He was underwater.

Then he realised he was breathing. Not in the normal way, where we breath air in and out. He was gulping in water, and his mind was clear. How am I doing this? Marvin thought.

Then he saw a thin line of bubbles coming out of the sides of his head. He carefully touched it. There were small, thin slits on both sides of his head, on his neck. He had gills.

He looked down at his body. He was still human, that was reassuring. His boots, gloves and leather armour was taken off. Between his fingers and toes were flippers.

What happened to me? He wondered. He was in a room, made of mossy stones, but completely liveable. It was comfortable, even. He remembered following the source of the explosion. He had found, to his surprise, merpeople fighting a giant tentacle monster. He had saved the mermaid girl, then got hit...

"I, Amilda, daughter of Almar, place the curse of merpeople upon you."

Suddenly, the stone door slid open. Two merpeople came rushing in. One was the mermaid who he had saved, and the other was an older man, with a look of authority. He had a glinting, metal medal on his chest. When the girl saw him, a sign of relief crossed her face. The man, though, frowned at him, like he was the reason why the monster had shown up.

Was it just him, or the girl looked more human? Merpeople looked only about 70% human. The merpeople had a fishlike look in their face. Their skin had a grey and blue tone. But the girl, her face looked like any human's face. Her skin was brighter. Marvin didn't remember her looking like this when she was attacked.

The merman talked to the girl in a language Marvin did not understand. It sounded like screeching of dolphins. The mermaid argued something, but the older man cut her off. Shaking his head, the merman swam outside the door. The door slid close.

The girl sighed. She looked up at Marvin. "Sorry for that." She said, in perfect Common Speech. "Galdorn likes me to know the consequences of saving you."

    "Saving me?" Marvin said.

"After your helmet shattered, the only way to save you was to transfer some of my abilities as a mermaid to you." She said sadly. "But the action is seen as a great disgrace to my race. Merpeople had not interacted with landwalkers for generations, save for Ragni King."

"The curse of merpeople." Marvin realised. The girl nodded. "If it is so, why did you place the curse on me? And also, why is it called a curse?"

"So many questions." The mermaid shook her head, but she was smiling. She looked at Marvin with green eyes. "I placed the curse on you because you saved my life, and I used the only possible way to save yours. I am not like the other merpeople. I do care about what is going outside the sea.
"It is called a curse, because mermaids are not allowed to walk outside the sea. Long time ago, the sea god Klyptanis cursed us race, when we disobeyed his orders. Now, we cannot leave the sea, without turning the entire ocean against you and being rejected by all merpeople.
"When I placed the curse on you, it transferred my abilities as a mermaid to you. Now you share the same curse as me, as long as I am alive, or linger in the water."

The girl looks up at him. "I do have a few questions of my own, sailor. First, what is your name?"

    "Marvin." Marvin said.

The girl smiles. "Nice to meet you, Marvin. My name is Amilda." She answers. "What is happening outside the sea, Marvin? There are more monsters, and we had sank three ships full of Corrupted creatures. What is happening?"

Marvin gaze toward the stone door. The travel from Fruma. The fall of village south of the Roots. The sheer amount of corrupted rising again. "The world is slowly becoming unsafe. Where monsters had not walked for centuries after the villagers' arrival, dark shadows tread. A village fell to the corruption. The villagers had all gone mad. Something big is brewing."

Amilda nodded. "I have been telling this to Galdorn. He does not listen."

Just then, a horn sounds from outside. The sound vibrates through the water. Amilda's face fell. She rushed to the door and slid it open. Marvin could see an army of merpeople swimming towards... another group of merpeople. The only difference between the two groups is that one of them all had reddish skins and a mad look on their faces. Corrupted.

"Where are my weapons, Amilda?" Marvin asked, looking frantically around the room. He spotted his dagger and armour on a corner.
