Although there is basically no lore surrounding the Forgery, it can be deduced from the messages from Corrupted bosses that you are in a future, in a different or imaginary universe, since these have not happened in "our" world. It seems that the Forgery shows and lets you experience the worst possible outcome of your actions. With it looking like it was Corrupted-looking, but the surrounding forest not having Decayed, it might be that the villagers have found a way to redirect the Decay into the Forgery. It was most probably a place where you could see the most possible future, but the Decay made it so you could only see the worst possible future, and only go to the places where the outlook was most from (aka Dungeons).

I'm not sure if it's been proven or not, but it's my headcanon that The Forgery is an alternate dimension showing what the world of Wynn would be like if the player were on the wrong side, just like A Hunter's Calling but in dungeon form.

Just a thought, if the villagers had found a way to redirect the decay into the Forgery, wouldn't they have found a way to deal with the decay at some point? Also, just another thought on the Forgery, any reason why it would be chained to the ground by, well, giant chains?

You raise some good points, and the chains is an absolute mystery to me as well. As for your first point, villagers long ago might have discovered a way to redirect the Decay into highly magical places, but it would only be a slowing measure, and would probably require some kind of sacrifice. It wasn't viable to keep doing this, since there weren't any highly magical places in the Kander Forest/Dark Forest. As for the second one, I am guessing that they keep the Forgery grounded in some way.

    My theory:

The Forgery is real. The Corrupted Dungeons are real. The Corrupted Dungeons are the future. Not just any future, but the future, the only future you can visit if you visit it. I'll explain.

The Corruption is a force, the resultant of the forces of Light and Dark colliding. It's chaos, entropy, and it spreads until it has nowhere left to spread. The only reason it hasn't consumed the world is because the Humans (and Villagers, all intelligent life really) fights against it. Imagine the Corruption like a rolling boulder, with the Humans pushing against it, trying to stop it rolling down the hill of time.
At the beginning, the world is pure. In the middle, it's partially Corrupted. In the end, it's Corrupted completely. Except it's doesn't have to be. Humans can stop the Corruption by many means, and over the course of a millenium, they have done quite well stopping it. The only way the Corruption can prevail would be by getting rid of the 'heroes' that stand in its way.

For instance, by sending them to the future.

Think back to the example of the boulder on the hill. Without the Humans, one of which is the Player, pushing against it, it can roll down without any issue. This would take time, but eventually, in the future, the whole world would be Corrupted. By sending the Player to the future, you're removing them from the picture, and now the Corruption can spread freely without your interference. Sending the player to the future to a Corrupted Dungeon with the pretext of it being Corrupted ensures it is Corrupted. The moment the Player travels back to the present, they are no longer absent for the rest of future history, so the Corruption doesn't consume the world, so it creates a portal to the future to get rid of the Player which doesn't entirely work, as the Player succeeds and returns to his own time. The Corruption doesn't know the Corrupted Dungeons won't kill the Player, because all of that is happening ahead in time.

It's a self-perpetuating thing, which exists because it has to exist, and doesn't stop existing because it hasn't yet worked, which hasn't yet happened because the Player has already beaten it. In truth, the Corruption has won, but only and only if the Player dies in the future. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

    It's quite an amazing theory.
