Question About "out Of My Mind" Quest

During the "Out of my Mind" quest, I died fighting the Malignant Beast. When I tried getting another Lab Key to try and get in again, after dumping it in the hopper while not knowing it wasn't the right key, I accidentally clicked on one of the kids. When the dialogue ended it granted me with the quest finish rewards (note that I still haven't defeated the Malignant Beast (that is supposed to be part of the quest)). Was this supposed to happen, or was it just a glitch? Give me your observations on this. Thanks.

 

There's no way it's intended. Whether that's a real bug I'm not sure.
