I have come to a point that I can understand some of the elemental stats but there are a few things I am dazed n confused about which makes keeping and tossing gear a slow process. I can't tell if i make be tossing a good thing or holding on to an item which ultimately isnt useful for my player. Appreciate any constructive advice. Thanks!

In armor I see a number e.g. Fire Defense -5, but im not sure how that affects damage. And in weapons, how does -9% Thunder defense, affect damage to me?

Could you explain Reflection, Melee Damage, Stealing, and what these affect?

How does poison work when stats say +203 poison/2s?

Why choose Mana Steal versus Mana Regen.
Same with choosing Life Steal versus Health Regen. I saw a player battle Qira and apparently the gear healed player very fast. So now I want to understand this better. I had a helmet Recharge: it had -8/4s Mana Regen, +6/2s Mana Steal. But when I wore just walking around, my mana went down to zero!

Also when getting two same weapons but with slightly different numbers in the stats, how do i which is better e.g. I got 2 Spirit Bows. #1 has +12% Air Damage, +5Agility. #2 +6% Air Damage, +7 Agility. Is it better to have a larger skill pt value or a larger % value in Air Damage. How to compare the two: Agility points vs. Air Damage.

If there is already a guide explaining the nuances between holding items with certains stats versus an item with slightly different values, please point the way. If not, could someone enlighten or give heads up that your workin on a guide. Thanks!

I dont know how much this will help. Mana regen means you get that much mana in that amount of time. Ex. 4/4s means 4 mana every 4 seconds is restored. Mana steal means you can hit an enemy and if for example it is 6/2s then you will get 6 mana bars restored in the next 2 seconds.

Elemental defense does not affect the damage you do; it affects how much elemental damage you take.

"Could you explain Reflection, Melee Damage, Stealing, and what these affect?"
Reflection, like Thorns, is the percent chance you will do 100% of the damage an enemy does to you on hit, to said enemy. The difference between Reflection and Thorns is that Thorns only applies to melee damage, while Reflection applies to ranged damage and spells. Melee Damage is additional "melee damage" that you do. Keep in mind that "Melee Damage" affects all default attacks (the ones that are not spells), even if it's a ranged attack (in the case of a Mage or Archer). "+ 1 Melee Damage" means you would do 1 extra damage with your basic attack. Stealing is the percent chance that you will loot an emerald from a mob upon hitting it. Stealing can only activate five times per individual mob at maximum, to prevent farming emeralds. If you had 30% Stealing, when hitting any mob (the mob type does not matter), they would have a 30% chance to drop an emerald, up to five times.

"How does poison work when stats say +203 poison/2s?"
Poison is measured in /3s, not /2s. Your total Poison stat affects how much Poison damage you do, which is damage applied over time after hitting a mob. If you were to have 30/3s Poison, after hitting a mob, they would take 10 damage per second for three seconds, which is 30 damage in total.

With the Gavel Update, there can be instances where you can have negative Health Regen or Mana Regen. In the case of your helmet, it is designed so that you must keep hitting mobs to keep Mana; being idle will drain your Mana. Choosing between Steal or Regen for a stat is your choice. Stealing is generally more offensive, as you must hit enemies, while Regen is more defensive, as you can stay back. However, Regen is generally slower.

"Also when getting two same weapons but with slightly different numbers in the stats, how do i which is better e.g. I got 2 Spirit Bows. #1 has +12% Air Damage, +5Agility. #2 +6% Air Damage, +7 Agility. Whichever one you choose depends on your current build. Skill points diminish in value as more are allocated to a stat. The fact that one increases more Agility means that that one gives you a higher chance of dodging attacks, as well as doing more Air damage. It also allows you to use gear with a higher Agility requirement. However, if you already have a high Agility stat, a point into Agility will affect less than part of a percent of additional Air damage, and you therefore may want to have more damage.

@awemanrank100 ... This is an awesome explanation...it should be part of a guide... I haven't come across one but if anyone else has seen one, please add that link to this thread so all can benefit!

Hey thanks for making this post! Although I sort of understood the basics of the new item system, this really helped me out!

    Could you/ anyone:

confirm if I understood this correctly :if an armor has Fire Defense -5, it means (after seeing my compass & looking at armor stats for defense) that 5 fire defense points was deducted from total Fire Defense values? If i had Zero Fire Defense to begin with then no effect on me overall ?

Now the -9% Fire Defense (i had posted Thunder on my op but that confused me so let's look at same element) ... How does the negative 9 percent change my defenses/damage done to me).?

Sometimes an armor has both the -5 & the -9% elemental defense. That's a double whammy right? Does this mean I lose defense by 5, and i take more damage against that element because i also have a 9 percent less defense??

Does this mean I need to know in advance what elemental damage a mob will deal? (Thanks @Selvut for previous feedback on Thunder boss)

So then I either get loads of hp or gear up with proper elemental defenses. It makes finding the right gear a challenge if you face unknown elemental enemy in different quests. Which brings me to my build conundrum.... I probably won't meet certain skill points requirements to wield or wear different elemental weapons or armor .... Does it mean i need to carry around several elemental defense for each Helm/chest/legs/boots. Well, well rounded gear like legendaries are hard to find.

I met players (if the quest is so difficult and they are solo-type players) that reset to put all in 1 skill to beat Death@ToA. (I think I got the boss nm right. I'm a lev 64 so no idea.) I ask you players out there, would you be forced to do this expensive reset every time? What else can you do?

Yes, i know the devs/gm/mods out there say ... I'm paraphrasing ... "Don't change skill pts like changing wpns"

Sorry for wall of text .. a helpful poster generated more curiosity /qstns in me...

an item that gives a -elemental defense value will deduct from your total elemental defense of said element, should you have 0 defense in that element and wear said item, you would end up with -said element defense.

a -percent elemental defense adds said percent of damage you take, if positive percent, less damage from said element is taken.

elemental defense values and elemental defense percents work together quite oddly, when you have a certain elemental defense value, the percent elemental defense identification acts on the value, like having 140 fire defense but -10% fire defense, you take 10% more fire damage from your 140 fire defense value (not sure if that is correct but that's my idea)

when an enemy or boss deals damage of a certain value, as long as you know what element you're weak against, you just have to be more cautious, a negative elemental defense is hindering, especially when i had -200 fire defense *shudder*

i wouldn't recommend carrying around many pieces of armor just to change your defense values, just stick with the pieces you feel are best concerning health and identifications

wasting skill points just to use certain armor is not a very good idea, if you don't plan on having any points in defense, don't try to reset and pool in points in defense for that armor piece, just go with what you want your skill point build to be

if you fight Death in Tower of Ascension, if you are really desperate to kill him after so many failed attempts then go ahead and try i guess

    1. If you have -5 FIRE DEFENSE, in your compass (player information) the amount of FIRE DEFENSE you had BEFORE you equipped that item would be reduced by 5. Here's an example. Say I have 40 FIRE DEFENSE. I get a new helmet that takes away 5 FIRE DEFENSE. Now I would have 35 FIRE DEFENSE after I put on the helmet. If I took the helmet off, it would go back to 40 FIRE DEFENSE.
    2. Let's just say you have 40 FIRE DEFENSE, and you put on a helmet that says "-9% Fire Defense". That would mean that it takes away 9% of 40 (40 is your total FIRE DEFENSE BEFORE you put on the helmet). With the helmet on, you now would have 36.4 FIRE DEFENSE because the helmet took away 9% of your total FIRE DEFENSE (9% of 40 is 3.6, 40-3.6= 36.4) (If the helmet says "-5 Fire Defense" AND "-9% Fire Defense", you would have 31.85 FIRE DEFENSE in total.)

    3. To answer the question about the elemental bosses etc. : Find a good skill point build for your class (many of these exist on the forums) and if you find a weapon that is strong in certain element categories (Example: My spear is good for FIRE Damage, but I might want to carry a WATER Damage spear on me in case I encounter a boss that is weak to Water and strong against Fire.), keep the elemental weapon alongside your main weapon. I've seen people with at least 4 different elemental wands in their hotbar!
