SPOILER My Thoughts On Disenchantment

This is bit out of the usual, but what the heck.

So recently I was scrolling through Netfix out of boredom and decided to watch Disenchantment. I watched the trailer before and it didn't interest me that much since it just looked like another modern Simpson's. Though after watching it, I have to say that it was... ok. Not Matt Groening's best work, but differently something different and definitely not the modern Simpson's (which isn't saying that much but hear me out).

What I didn't know going into it was that the show was serialized, i.e. each season follows a continuous story that changes the status quo as it progresses. And this is what made the show standout because I ended up caring what was going on in the end, even though some of the characters aren't the most likeable.

Which brings me to spoiler territory, so if this sounds even somewhat interesting I recommend that you stop reading and check it out. However, I wouldn't recommend doing so solely for the comedy. As a comedy, it's not really spectacular. I never laughed once during the whole season. It might just be because of my sense of humor and all, but the timing and pacing of the jokes felt... off. Like they weren't really cringy or anything, it just felt like they were missing something. I won't spoil the ending of the season though.

So the main premise of the show for those that haven't heard of it before is the coming-of age story of a ambitious, Irish? teenage princess named Bean in the magical, medieval fairy tale land of Dreamland. And while this protagonist is neither fat nor pink nor rides a magic star, she does consume A LOT... a lot of drugs and alcohol. She's also a bit of twat too and listens to a literal demon to get back at her dad, but besides that she's fine. I mean I would probably be pissed and drunk too all the time if my purpose was to be married off.

But yeah, the season is mostly her demon trying to make her as irresponsible and drunk as possible as a part of some evil duo's plan (we never learn their names) while an elf named Elfo tags along with them. He's mostly the comic relief and spends most of the time getting his blood drained out by her father who is trying to get the Elixir of Life.

The trio have a decent chemistry, and I do like the relationship between Bean and her father, but nothing else really stands out. Everyone else is just a 1D side character who probably will get killed at some point. Overall, it's not the best show, but it is worth checking out.

Who else thought this was a callback to that ”please disenchant me” thread a while back?

 

Yeah... it’s that level. :-/

It’s more of something to watch in the background, but it is something to watch nonetheless.

 

Eh, it's just meh. It kept my attention for most of it, and that's it. The show could have been 10 times worse if it wasn't serialized.

I just think that it's worth a try, especially if you have nothing to watch on Netflix. Which I know isn't saying much, but there's SOME potential in this show.
