My Quest Item Helmet Stopped Working

I can't beat the hunger of the Gerts part 2 because when I try to speak to the captured Gert, he says the same thing whether I wear the Gert mask or not, which keeps me from leaving the room. Relogging doesn't work, and I'm worried that if I /kill I will be unable to enter the basement again. Does anyone know how to fix this?

 

Does he keep repeating the "don't leave me here" line over and over? If so, then I've had the same problem. Running back the way you came from seems to help, but I don't know if that's a guaranteed fix.

 

just tried it and it didn't work. The issue is that when i try to talk to him like he and the quest book says, he just keeps saying "Human, come close, Gert hunger! Gert eat human!" and doesn't progress the story whether I'm wearing the Gert mask or not
