Make This Against The Rules.

So, last night my friend showed me this:

Note, that's not me.
That's someone, no idea who, that renamed themselves to have my name.
Now, I wasn't going to say anything about this, until I got some random person asking me about my "Strati"

Seems the person who nicknamed themselves to me is selling a strati.
Now, this is nothing more than a slight annoyance, until you consider what someone could do with this.
Making someone look bad, ruining someone's image, or just spreading rumors and false information becomes incredibly easy when you can disguise yourself as them. Of course, not everyone would fall for this, you can easily see someone's real name by hovering you're mouse over their name in chat, however, if someone is simply glancing at chat, not paying attention, or maybe uninformed about the feature, you could easily fall for it.

Either way, this could easily be used to cause trouble for players, rather on purpose or not.

Why is this the case? I feel like this should've been done long ago but they should've implemented a rule not to impersonate anybody, especially with this new nickname system in place

 

This definitely needs to be addressed, I could definitely see some people try and impersonate random players and cause them trouble. What puzzles me is how they didn't think of this something like this happening when making the nickname feature, it really could, as you say, ruin someone's image in the community.

Hopefully now that you've brought this issue up they'll do something about it.

As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
I thought nicked people had their names italicized/marked? If not they need to be.

 

They are italicized, but again, it's fairly easy to miss, if someone wasn't paying attention, just glancing, or wasn't familiar with the system, they could be tricked.

And yeah, I'm sure this guy specifically means no harm, I'm fairly certain his named himself after a couple of big wynncrafts, and his probably just trying to be funny in doing so. My issue isn't with him, I don't even know who they are, my issue is what someone could possibly do with it.

 

Hypixel's nickname command rejects usernames that've logged onto the server before as actual players. Seems like a reasonable way to prevent this.
