So these are some questions I've had for a while and I can't seem to get a good answer from anyone.

What I understand about loot chests so far is this:
    1. They can be found almost all over the map, and disappear after being closed
    2. Legendary and rare items seldom appear
    3. Chests contain more valuable items as you increase in level
    4. The more hidden it is, the better stuff you get
Please tell me if I am correct (especially for numbers 3 and 4).

If there is anything else about loot chests that I don't know, please tell me.

    Thanks all!

Okay, so there are basically 4 tiers of loot chests, tiers 3 and 4 being a lot better than the others. These are generally hidden, so I that answers question 4. As for levels, the chests give loot according to enemies around them, meaning that you will get better stuff as your go to higher leveled areas. Hope this helped!

From my experience, this isn't always necessarily true. Some loot chests will give items according to the area's general level range, but others will give items according to your level.

As an example, I looted a Tier 3 (or maybe it was 4?) loot chest near the Tower of Ascension as a level 40ish class and unsurprisingly got level 40 items. Later I looted the same chest as a level 80ish class and somehow got a Tisaun's Proof (lv88 spear) out of it. Other chests in the area consistently gave me level 40 items.

I don't have a clue what determines whether the chest you loot gives items according to your level or the area's, but it's clear to me that both kinds of loot chests exist.

Alright so from this I gather that the system (if there is one) is rather unpredictable.

    Thanks for all the replies!

Another point to add, to distinguish loot chests level 1 and 2 versus loot chests level 3 and 4...

The loot from level 3 and 4 chests are targeted more towards the class you're using (with weapons). For example, if you are using mage and open a T3, 80% on average of the weapons should be wands. Level 1 and 2 loot chests are designed to be more random, with no influence from the class you are using.

If there are mobs that spawn nearby is how I think it is determined. For example if a chest is near level 20 mobs it will always give level 20 items but if you loot a chest in an open space with no mobs you get items based on the class' level.

Yea, earlier today I got a rare wand (haven't identified yet) from what I think was a Tier 3 chest, because I received emeralds and a bow as well.

Good items appear with time, but from my experience they appear more in t3s. t4s are normally trash.

The wiki needs updating though. Loot chest used to be that way but after Gavel, I stopped understanding them.
