    ???, Province of Fruma - 999 AP

    “Do I have to go?”

His voice could barely be heard over the crashing storm. Raindrops and tears poured down his face together, as booming thunder could be heard in the distance, the lightning accompanying it filling the sky with a blinding light. Despite all of this, the knight remained as stoic as always. He already knew what the answer was, but every part of him hoped and ached that it wouldn’t be.

“By law of the province of Fruma, and word of her majesty, you, Aledar, are to be arrested and sent to prison indefinitely for failing to meet your wheat quota for this month. If you resist, you and your family will be executed, and all of your possessions seized.”

He had no choice. If he didn’t go with them… he didn’t want his family to die. Reluctantly, he gave in, and the warrior led him to the carriage. Why did it have to be this way… why did this have to happen?

He stepped into the carriage, and the door slammed shut behind him. He watched his farm get farther and farther away, leaving his whole life behind… then the world went black.

“You’re not going to take them!”

He stood at the door to his home, in front of his wife and daughter, blocking any way of entry into the home. His face was contorted with rage and defiance. “I’ll never let you lay a finger on them!”

“Tasim, please don’t do this,” his wife whispered. “Just let us go. We’ll be fine.”

“Never. I refuse to even think that you could be in one of those horrible prisons. I would rather die than-“

One of the knights stepped forward, their monotone deep voice interrupting his declaration. “Tasim, step away from the building. Your wife is under arrest for suspected treason against the queen. If you do not comply, you will be killed.”

“I’ll never let you do that!” Tasim spat. “I would go in her place to that hell than let her be taken by you!”

The knight seemed to contemplate his shout. “Are you stating that you would be arrested in place of your wife, and take all charges against her as if they were your own?”

“I would do it a thousand times if it meant she wasn’t forced to go to prison!”

“Very well.” The knight stared directly at him, almost staring into his soul. “Tasim, by the law of the province of Fruma, and the word of her majesty, you are to be arrested and sent to prison indefinitely for suspected treason. If you resist, you and your family will be executed, and all of your possessions seized.”

Stoic and determined, he stepped away from the door and directly towards the knights. Without any hesitation, he was cuffed and led into their carriage. Just as it was pulling away, he looked back, and saw his wife standing motionless, tears dripping down her face. Just quiet enough that the guards couldn’t hear, he whispered, “I love you.” Then, the world went black.

    “Let me go!”

She lashed out with her fist, trying to make contact with one of the iron-clad soldiers, but form her restrained position, she wasn’t even able to connect. The warrior didn’t even bat an eye, or at least, it didn’t seem like they did. Their helmets covered their entire face and made them look like faceless soldiers.

She tried again, but again failed to make any sort of contact. Suddenly, there was a massive pain in her foot, followed by the crunching of bone. The warrior restraining her had crushed her left foot with his steel boot, making pain flare up her body and prevent her from making another attack.

“That will teach you not to resist.”

She still struggled, trying to wriggle free from her captor, but couldn’t make any progress. She looked up at the soldier standing in front of her and growled with fury. “What did I do to deserve this?” She shouted, breathing heavily. The knight took this as initiative.

“By law of the province of Fruma, and word of her majesty, you, Jenprest, are to be arrested and sent to prison indefinitely for thievery.”

“I’m not going with you! I don’t deserve this! I was just doing what I had to!”

The soldier stared directly at her. “If you do not comply, we will have to arrest you by force.” Something hit her hard in the head, and the world went black.

    “Why?”

He watched the flames dance across his house, burning everything inside it to the ground. The knights showed no remorse for their actions, allowing no emotion to leave their cold suits of armor as they destroyed the only life he had ever known.

    “My workshop… my potions… everything…”
It had all happened so quick. One moment he was tinkering with a new recipe, the next, he was being dragged out of his house as it was ignited. He had known there were risks to this kind of business, but he hadn’t expected this.

“Caero.” The lead knight said, prompting him to look up at the soldier. “By law of the province of Fruma, and word of her majesty, you are to be arrested and sent to prison indefinitely for disregard of alchemy restrictions and regulations.”

All he had done was try to make potions for the people in the village, but someone must have reported him, and now everything was lost. The village relied on him. Did these soldiers ever think about their citizens?

He didn’t resist as he was dragged and carried to the carriage that awaited him. It began to drive away, and as it left the village, he felt nothing but sadness. Then, the world went black.

    “Don’t you dare!”

She was almost ready to lunge at the guard in pure rage. “Don’t even think about breaking it!”

The cold-hearted knight did not even react to her shouts, and instead simply lifted up the staff they was carrying in both hands, parallel to the ground. Then, without hesitation, they drove their knee up into the staff, breaking it in half with a sharp crack. The soldier dropped the two halves of the artifact onto the ground, the weapon now rendered useless forever.

“No! That was a family heirloom! Why would you destroy it?”

The same knight who had just destroyed her most valuable possession now turned to her. “By law of the province of Fruma, and word of her majesty, you, Bea, are to be arrested and sent to prison indefinitely for unregistered possession of a weapon. If you resist, you and your family will be executed, and all of your possessions seized.”

She felt herself being dragged away from her house, numbly staring at the two broken halves of the staff lying on the grass. She was pulled into the carriage, and then the world went black.

New project I'm working on, so long as I don't lose interest but I'd say it's coming out pretty well so far.
