Spoilers for Realm of Light questline
Before we begin, a little disclaimer. I may have forgotten something. Im not an endgame character, most of my knowledge about wynncraft lore is from the wiki and forums. If I have forgotten something please mention me and I'll fix it. Don't take everything I say for granted, It is my personal opinion and theories on Gavel update. Also Minor Profanity.

So I just finished RoL questline, quite surprised considering it took me 2 hours without really using wiki as wiki is non existent in 1.20. RoL is also a pretty deep lore mine for Gavel and quite interesting if you like lore like me. I haven't done any discoveries with Lari but I have a strong image in my head that Lari has fucked up a couple times before you meet her. For who Lari is, she is an elf, i'd say around one-two thousand years old, how I know that?
which salted did mention in the changelog. Lari also has a relation with Dullahan, another elf who lives in Dullahan castle you know that one. While lore, well a few manage to understand it i have partially figured out what the hell is happening. But Here is the deal. Most of these i say here are what I experienced in the quest and concluded.

    RoL I - Plot holes

In this quest, well its the good old worm holes quest but this time you do meet Lari officially. Her dialogue is questionable but we can understand that she doesnt like the decay much. During the quest you have to seek her help to find the "wyrm" causing this. The quest is same but the wyrm has a boss with 3million hp, you just need to survive while she begs the creature to peacefully negotiate. Now I must say the next part is not quite well interesting. You see, the wyrm vores both of you. You heard me, Lari is consenting with vore. That shit it messed up. Anyways she proceeds to kill the wyrm with "light" and proceeds to have a mental breakdown for that as she swore to "not harm creatures" as "im made from pure light". There is a problem tho, The grootslags still exist.

What do we learn from this? She is an interesting character no listen to me, taproot and headless hunt (now history) explain it in depth.

RoL II - Issues with the current 1.19 timeline

When I first did this quest, i hated it. You had to get flowers all around the forest and it wasnt fun, now its just her having more mental breakdowns. In this quest we are introduced to well his name is ??? Lari says its the light guardian and another un head guy you may know as Orphion. Now a little insight of Orphion

Orphion is probably a god, a light god living the the light realm. He gave powers to the elves and tasked them with protecting the forest. While you have Orphion, it is hinted that he fell after decay reached him and probably hided somewhere. I havent done any raids, I cannot tell you if the nexus its him or not. But Orphion is actually the guy that guides you through the story and gives you "power" anyways more on that in RoL IV. You and Lari head to the taproot after the wyrm or Orphion calls. She has a mental breakdown again and opens a gate to the past or sometime in today with two villagers discussing. You have the great option to kill either one of them to be seen as worthy. I killed the mayor because why not and i moved next stage.

Now Lari gets mad because she "spent centuries" trying to reddem herself and the "human" (i like to call everyone fruman) comes in a week (because in the eyes of Wynncraft, only a week has passed since you came to gavel) and takes her place. Orphion then allows you access to enter the taproot and witness the light forest while Lari is having a mental breakdown. The light forest is cool, the CT hasnt changed anything props to them, then you learn about the decay..

Apperantly it just came to existence. But the current timeline is broken. Mr Dullahan was executed (see RoL 3) after the decay came meaning that the decay shouldve either happened before the portal or after the portal. According to Lari, elves have some short of light in them. so does that mean that they can stop the decay too? Anyways She has an epic fight with the decay beings and loses, then the taproot asks you to visit the realm and the quest is over.

What do we learn? The timeline is broken, I have a few theories on it found below. Lari is probably an offspring of Orphion, Lari had a deep relation with mr Dullahan, the decay is a random mite.

Theory 1: The Decay appeared BP
Decay is old, its been there for a while probably a world balancer as the guardian explains that gavel, wynn and the silent expanse, probably dern have co existed for many many times. Gavel is pure, Wynn is corrupt and Dern is either a void/decay/corrupt cocktail. The problem with this one is that Decay mustve appeared sometime before the portal was opened as it was only a mite. Which leads to a plothole: Decay is just a natural thing that has happened in the past where light is at the most. We know that decay is actually equal to the light. With Lari nearly destroying it but being too much of a pacifist which lead to possibly the largest genocide on Gavel. Lari caused problems because she was a pacifist. My theory against this is that it isnt specified but the time line is messed up. Dullahan is alive, having fought side by side with Lari and was killed in the fight so this caused problems

Theory 2: The Decay was caused the Elves
It is possible that the elves have caused the decay. There isnt much known but "darkness" is a common thing of people being influenced by it, aka Dern. This is also my theory on the decay being AP as some elves traveled to wynn returned to gavel and started spreading corruption on steorids

    Theory 3: Decay happened AP
Current timeline suggests that the decay happened after the portal opened. But it has its flaws. Wynn is irrelevant, the portal caused trouble yes but corruption is different than decay. Well both we know originate from dern, this is confirmed in RoL V. Dern is like a neutral aggressive thing that has existed for a while. The nether portal opening mustve caused dern to awaken and spread various corruptions or decays around. Im gonna stick that the theory 1 is actually canon in my head

TLDR? 1.20 broke the timeline pls fix

RoL III - Lari is a good "mary sue"/Dullahan makes sense

This quest was, well big. We get an insight on what the heck happened with the Decay and break the timeline more. To begin with, Dullahan is an elf, probably as old as Lari but less stuborn. Things we know that Dullahan is not immortal, has died a few times, can heal and has deep understanding of the Decay. The quest mostly tells the tale from the eyes of Dullahan how the decay took over, how Lari failed to stop it twice and his eventual exceution by the villagers as they thought he caused these problems. Eventually you get to fight an abomination and see the ending which results in the aftermath. Here there is a lot of lore to discuss.

Lari is a "mary sue". She has wings, can heal, can call a homing airstrike on you and has light magic. Light magic is strong. She though has a bad side which shows she cant kill so she is an essential god that cant kill. But here is the thing. Lari goes in a phase of what we call a character development and in the end she is more welcome to help you (despite you knowing that you can 2 tap her) and would rather thank you for your help. Speaking of gods, Im a lv 84 archer that spends most of the time in the wiki reading the gavel and wynn lore. I know there are several "god" beings like Orphion, The Eye and the Olm. But It is not up to me to make new lore duh, im just theorizing to fix the timeline. Dullahan eventually fell due to his wounds and obsession with darkness. Now personally I am pro-Decay because elves are assholes towards the player despite the player being able to solo no hit EO and Qira but they don't know this. I know when you become obsessed with Dern/Corruption/Decay, you are gone, shown what happened to the twains, Bak'al and the corruptor of worlds. This also is pointed in most quests around Nesaak, Detlas and Nivla. Oh did I mention lazarus pits makes an apperance? There isn't much to go on about it but its interesting.

Now, If I ever finish writing this, I will make a new post discussing the lore of 1.20 Decay because there is a lot of it and I don't wanna write a book. Decay is a thing that many don't talk about, either because lore is made by the CT or the mighty grian or discussing it is difficult. Lari is a either hated character or a beloved depending on what, for me, I read lore so its more interesting.

In conclusion headless history is the decay story from POV of Dullahan. Nothing changes appart that Lari is horrible at her job.

RoL IV - Elves are high on drugs. Epic 1v1

Well This quest was cool, well depends. Firstly the highlight of the quest "wood elf". Im not sure why but I found it funny. In this quest It was rather confusing as Lari started showing hatred to the player for "taking her job and doing it better". While I wasn't really paying attention, we visit the elves of Aldorei. Well While Lari discusses stuff with the elders they discuss about the human's aid being more helpful. Lari departs gonna find a herb. You talk to the elder and he mentions the second drug in the game, "Canned Abis". Now I wouldn't care less but this plays a big role to the game as not only the elves have LSD mushrooms, they have weed. The Decay is probably right for targetting them. I'm not gonna sit here but Lari gets triggered and proceeds to use all available weapons on you:
    > annoying flamethrower arrow storm thing
    > Orbital bombardment
    > teleport dash
    > Homing death ray

After that the guardian of the forest proceeds to call her out and begin a 52 lines of fucking dialogue agruing with her. After that we get to the more interesting stuff. We are shown one of the most clever way to tell everyone that "lmao find how we broke the timeline" . Besically there are 6 realms. Oh you dont like 6 realms? 3 realms. You have Wynncraft realm, Dern realm and Light realm. you also have a war realm but i wouldnt care less. Gavel has light, Wynn has corruption/war and Dern has everything. But Dern invaded Gavel with the decay. Did that confuse you? If yes that is good, if not that is extra good.

But how do you know the purple is actually dern? Well we know the silent expanse is connected to dern. Silent Expanse color is purple. MEANING that the purple is actually dern/the SE. Thats the most important thing in the quest. After that you get access to the RoL.

Conclusion: Dern = decay theory is actually interesting.
    RoL V - Bak'al appears

Well, RoL is a bit weird. Lari says that the RoL has been weakened a lot by the parasites. Now Lari mentions the decay has made its way to RoL and the light has faded. We know that Orphion has infact fought the decay in Light as most bridges to the nexus are destroyed. The Minigames to activate the monoliths. The monoliths are interesting af, I will link to you a thread to read about them by @Ellphant https://forums.wynncraft.com/threads/theory-kinda-why-is-no-one-talking-about-this.276822/

Now we find Bak'al. This is a huge deal. We know Bob beated the living shit out of Bak'al inWynn making him disappear for good. People said he died but this proves two things.
    1. The corruption wars moved to Gavel as the decay
    2. Bak'al is either undead or cannot be killed by non-light or non-dern weapons/people.

First thing is that Bak'al looks well, he doesnt seem to have anything wrong with him and suggests that he has already taken over the light an Orphion. Second thing Lari recognises Bak'al which is weird. Lari and Bak'al fight in the most anti climactic battle and both disappear and the quest ends. Here are the things. Lari is probably alive, CT loves killing NPCs as much as I do killing orcs, there will be a sequel probably but I can't theorize on nothing. So Either Bak'al was consumed by the light or both just became weak and they truced. The end is confusing, people are already saying Lari is dead.

    Final Notes and My Opinion

I am rather stressed with the 1.20 update. Well I personally never really commented on wynncraft lore knowing it was somewhat "complete" I just read in the background, but yesterday, I got hooked into re-reading the entirety of the timeline because something fell odd.

Lari is a well developed character, while having immense power and abilities, she is balanced. The Decay lore tho brings questions like: Why didn't the other light creatures just storm Dern or the source and delete it. Orphion sounds powerful and yet the light creatures sit back and be like: "ah im gonna go sleep bye!" As I said before, I only got into wynncraft lore a few months ago as dern is interesting. If you wanna get full experience, just do the quest .

There are some threads here that I recommend reading.

    Hence the grootslang raid

You're actually supposed to kill the mayor. Leaving or killing Urelix will get orphion to chastise you and replay the scene

The decay starts when Lari loses her 1st battle against it iirc, and in the 3rd battle of Lari and Dullahan vs the decay creature, Dullhan gets infected by it. The villagers see the infected dullhan near decay and plan an execution

Not really she has 300k hp and as a morph mage (which is supposed to be decent) she took like 9k of my hp with a certain attack

They're only assholes because of conflicting moralities. Im pretty sure they probably dont like humans because they think they're warmongers, just like they hate villagers because of their greed

If you were in the workplace and you wanted to keep your job, and someone else showed better promise in doing your job, would you not get angry? This is the dilemma that Lari is facing

I think the one problem with Larry is that we don't ever see a moment of her pacifist ideals actually paying off.

Despite her many centuries of fuckups, I'm assuming that she must have had some small victories here and there. However, what information is given to us implies that she literally failed every single fight in the past 1000 years of fighting the Decay. This just leads us to view Larry as some mega elf hippy instead of someone who is morally conflicted.

    EDIT

Turns out she does do stuff to help against the Decay

Well quite as ive seen she did fight it. The many scenes of Headless history and Taproot show that she has been fighting against the decay a lot, mostly failinh because "I won't kill this i'll just trap it"
From what wynncraft has taught me, if it has a red name, kill it.
    ________________________________
Decay shows in taproot that it appeared as a bug/just came in existence which is weird considering things dont just appear from thin air: Corruption happened because of the portal is an example. And tbh Dullahyan is strong af, how would he fall to a sleeping spell even.

Elfs were taught by the light moralities so the light is just a weird mess. The greed said to happen with the decay but with the new update thats a bit odd.

Actually it didn't just pop out of existence, it feel out of the sky like a meteor and if you have your render distance long enough, you can see a portal in the sky - just like the one you see in the light realm when ba' al appeared

you got so many things wrong

No, Headless history literally gives you the date that things happened. The Equinox happened in 0 AP, the same year the portal was found in Wynn.

The elves are literally against the decay, ever heard of the Sol Embassy? Also, there is no evidence that Elves have EVER been to wynn. Corruption is from the Realm of War, the nether. It's a spread of residue from the battle between light and dark. When the 2 forces collide, corruption is formed. The Decay is from The Realm of Darkness, Dern. The parasite is a creature sent by the Dern Beast to infect Gavel and Orphion. If the Elves were responsible for the Decay they'd know it wasn't greed that caused it.

Just gotta say again that the Corruption is NOT from Dern. The corruption is from The Nether, a land wrecked by the clash between Light and Dark. The Equinox and the discovery of the portal happening on the same year is likely a coincidence.

Lari is not an offspring of orphion, she is a regular Elf who was chosen by Orphion to be his warrior
Dullahan is some random simp from aldorei who was stalking Lari. They only became friends because dullahan revived Lari after she was literally murdered by the parasite

Dullahan knows nothing about the Decay, he turned evil because the decay parasite infected him. Just because he got hit once doesn't mean he knows everything about the decay. Even after being infected he didn't turn evil, he just had dark powers. He didn't become evil because of these powers, it was because the villagers executed him out of fear.

She does not recognize Bak'al, she recognizes that he is a corrupted human. She has experience with the side effects of corruption because it happened to Dullahan. It's also pretty obvious since he came out of some random portal and told her that this was ''our land''

so to summarize, do more research, pay more attention, and get some extra lore from secret discoveries before making bold assumptions.

She followed the heart, much more than her head. I kinda have an understanding of her ideals because I too am someone that values the heart over the brain. And as a light creature that is totally understandable. The light is a mess, yes, but the ultimate goal of the light is to defeat what's bad, right?
As such, I don't want her to die. My belief is that Lari can corrupt the Dernic Beasts and survive, much like Bak'al and his destruction all over the Realm of Light.

The decay timeline is explained in the Dark Forest Ultimate Discovery. I actually like how the decay is shown in 1.20 since it's now more of an exponential threat rather than a constant one.

Lari is not a mary sue. In fact, in the quests, the story basically tells you that she is a complete failure and she knows it. It's only after you start killing things and introduce a layer of nuance to her one sided ideology that she undergoes character development.

I absolutely love the absence of morals from Orphion. It makes sense that an all-powerful god would not have time for morality. It kinda makes it seem like the light isn't really on the side of justice, just the side that the player takes because the alternative is way worse.

Also, the Guardian of the Forest (or whatever it's name was) specifically states that Orphion's main priority is survival. Orphion's the 'beast' of Light who's been infected by Dark parasites according to the cutscenes explaining the different realms. It's probably just convenient for it that the player is both strong plus has a motivation to fight back against the source behind the Decay. Essentially it just goes to prove what the Guardian said about Good vs. Evil not necessarily being the same as Light vs. Dark. Removes the whole 'good main vs. bad villain' vibe when it's all about survival and balance of the two forces.

as a side note its pretty cool that elphaba makes an appearance in gavel before a journey beyond
i feel like ct might do a thing like that with lari, hence why i think 1.21 may be dern

Someone already pointed out some of the holes in this theory, but I want to add some more stuff about Lari, since I feel there is complete misinterpretation about her character. Here's my deconstruction:

Personally, I love her story arc. It's built around a clash between what you think is right, what you believe is right, and what needs to be done. The rendition is even more impactful since you, the player, experience the same conflict at the same time.

Lari hesitated to kill the grootslang, despite it being the only option. I was just as conflicted in taproot, when I wanted to leave, and then tried killing urelix. When I realized killing the mayor was the only option, I was super confused! Here was the embodiment of the light, of goodness, the enemy of the dark forces invading the player's world, ordering me to kill an innocent person, who was merely acting on their own principles. The turmoil of having not doing the "right" thing left me hesitant to follow Orphion's orders. However, as the hardened warrior from a war-torn province, you eventually resign yourself to doing what needs to be done, for the greater good. The choices are simple, and over the span of less than a month.

Now imagine Lari's view. Prior to 0 AP, she was living in Aldorei for a presumably long period of time, learning the virtues of the elves, that are seen in Aldorei's secret. Then, she becomes an emissary to the Light, a LITERAL representative of virtue. With this sacred task, she clings more and more to these ideals. And it gets worse, because she is essentially alone for a thousand years. No one else can understand her, and when Orphion cuts her off, she has nothing to fall back to except these same virtues. Then, after a millenium of seeing her world crumble, her friends dying, her fruitless attempts to save everything, a simple human comes along, and bonds immediately with the light.

Essentially, she has been following this virtues, which have kept her going, and all of a sudden, has to face the fact that she has been doing everything wrong. And it's hard to accept when you're wrong. A thousand years of pent-up rage is released, with all the power of the light, and no Beast to guide it, which leads to your fight. It would be demeaning to call her triggered: you have, in many ways, stolen the only thing she still has, after all this time: a purpose.

Examining all of this also makes the character of the Light Beast all the more fascinating. Lari wields the power needed to kill the darkness, but refuses to wield it. Orphion realizes that the only way to make her do what needs to be done is reveal what is preventing her. She has the capacity to kill, and the only thing stopping her is her code. By using you as a way to push Lari to her limits, Orphion shows her that she is capable of something unspeakable, that would shatter every rule she has built her existence around. This experience proves just how fragile morals can be: they can't guide you in every situation, and are overwhelmed by emotion. No longer bound by the code, Lari is fully ready and realized for the fight against the darkness.

    Like someone mentioned above,

Forcing you to kill the mayor goes against what both the player and Lari would consider "good". This whole questline shows that Light is not necessarily good, but necessary. In order to aid in a clash between immortals, you and Lari must learn what is required of immortals. Not what you think is right, not what you think others think is right, but what is required.

Idk how much of this is relevant to the thread at the end of the day, but I feel like Lari needs a bit of support!
