Is It The More Neutral Damage The Better The Weapon?

Title explains it all. But if you have a lvl 30 dagger with 8-13 neutral does that mean it will be really bad to fight with

 

Not only the damage, but also the attack speed is important. Some other important stats include: walk speed, mana regen, +damage stats, poison and I'm probably forgetting some.

Ok there are many layers of no to this but there are many weapons which are better at certain things than others.

First of all raw damage doesn't mean much, it's more about the DPS (damage per second) which also factors in the attack speed of the weapon. If a weapon has slightly more raw damage but is 2 tiers slower it has way less actuall DPS. @Nyam actually made graphs with all of the weapons there are and their DPS because apparently she has -2 lives.

Then there's also elemental damage, which is slightly less useful than neutral damage but is still damage and the fact that some weapons have less damage but give you more health, which can be better if you are archer and can kill most things with an arrow bomb but can also die easily.

A lot of weapons also do more damage but in a different way, like giving you more spell damage or mana regen so you can cast more spells or poison or thorns or explosion or the other 500 stats used for like 5 items throughout the whole game.

So yea there is way more to optimizing your build than the biggest numbers. You don't really have to care about that until the endgame but you should at least consider attack speed and spell damage when picking what weapon to choose

Why was I summoned

 

Literally everyone is missing the point of this thread.

Neutral damage is not affected by elemental weaknesses or resistances. For example, a water elemental might have a weakness to thunder damage and a resistance to fire damage. If your weapon uses fire damage, it will be a tougher enemy, while using thunder damage will make it easier. Neutral weapons don't have to worry about this, making them more of a generalist. Neutral damage is especially useful lategame, where certain bosses have extremely high elemental defenses.

However, this does have a downside. Many items will identify with an elemental damage boost, which obviously doesn't apply to neutral damage. In addition, the higher one of your stats is the more elemental damage you will deal with its respetive element. For example, having a high defense makes you deal more fire damage.

At a lower level, the element doesn't really matter but you'll need to figure out what build you want to use later on.

TL;DR - Neutral damage pierces elemental defenses but generally does less direct damage due to stat boosts. Doesn't matter too much early on, don't worry.
