    Chapter 2: The Captain's Words

    --=--=--=--
Thunk. The raft hit the sandy shores hard, and Tika practically flung herself off the little ship onto land. She tried to peer through the fog, but it both cut vision and muffled sound. The only thing she could hear was her own footsteps and her friends clambering off the ship. Not even a single wave. And where were the seagulls she’d heard so much about? The quiet was, admittedly, rather off-putting... “Are you boys coming? Did you forget where we are?! We’re at Llevigar! Get out here so we can go see the city!” Her excitement dispelled any fear she may have had, and she paced around in the sand waiting for her companions.

“I would suggest we at least tread carefully. The captain’s advice couldn’t have been completely unfounded, you know,” Bayth spoke softly as he stepped off the ship. “I never heard any stories about this weird fog, either. It’s so thick, I’d be willing to bet Velte’s knife could chop through it. Wasn’t this beach supposed to be eternally sunny?” Tika blinked. He was right. All the stories said this beach hadn’t received a cloudy day in decades...it certainly was mysterious, but in her mind, it only added to the suspense. The fog would dramatically clear up as they approached those massive doors and they saw the outline of the city upon the cliff...yet, as they walked forward, it did not. In fact, it only got thicker as they stepped forward. The silence of the beach was replaced with a low, eerie drone, without discernible source. The beaten dirt road was suddenly replaced with stony clacks. Lights pulsed about them, flickering.

“Ugh! I can’t SEE anything! Did one of the mages mess up a spell or something?!” The lack of the wondrous images from her stories angered Tika. “That’s it, step back you two. Let’s hope this works...” She gripped her spear tightly, and took a broad stance, not even bothering to look back to see if her friends were clear, and let loose a deafening roar into the fog. The force of the spell caused the mist to recede, revealing their location. They had already passed through the great doors. The ornate lamps mounted within the tarnished white walls sparked and crackled. Many were completely broken. It only dawned on Tika how bad a state the city was in when Velte called out. “You two should probably see this. The doors. Outside.” Bayth gasped as he saw what the assassin was referring to. “Tika! Get out here, now! Look!” Stepping out, she mirrored Bayth’s shock when she saw the doors, ripped off their hinges and thrown into the mountainside.

“I don’t know how this is possible, but whatever managed to do that must be massively strong. Those doors must have been extremely heavy,” Velte continued, taking a few steps towards the sturdy stone cliff. “Seems our crown jewel wasn’t as invincible as we thought it was.” He was greeted by a sharp smack on the head, courtesy of a fuming Tika. “There is no way Llevigar could’ve fallen, you know that! That’s like saying Troms is a vulnerable town! There was...it was...probably just an earthquake or something!” There was obvious desperation in her voice. She didn’t want to believe what she was seeing. “Tika, you need to calm down. Hitting me isn’t going to change the reality of the situation. Let’s just cut our losses and get out of here. Maybe we can catch up to the captain on the raft, or find a usable ship like he said.”

Her hopes sunk. How could this possibly have occurred? This has to have been a fluke, she thought. Kymer never would’ve let this happen. “I am not leaving until I see the rest of the city. You two can go if you want, but I’m not giving up so quickly!” She hoisted her spear into the air as she yelled. “See this spear? If there’s any danger in this city, Gungnir is going to run it through!” Before either of the two could say a thing, she dashed back into the gates at full speed. Her boots clanged against the broken marble, and she ran out into the garden plaza. The sea captain’s words danced in her mind...

“That land be nothin’ but desolation now.”
