    Chapter I: Arrival

    --=--=--=--

“Ye’r sailin’ yerselves to an early grave, mates. That land be nothin’ but desolation now.”

“I have a hard time believing that. Have you ever heard the stories they’ve told about that place? There’s no way it could just fall, like that!”

“...well, I s’pose it ain’t no nevermind to me. Ferry costs th’ same anyhow. Just know there won’t be a ship ta bring ye back once ye’r there. This be a one-way trip, lads.”

It had been three weeks since they set sail, destined for the crown jewel of Gavel, the great marble spires of Llevigar. The seas had been calm, but an air of dread hung over the three adventurers as they approached the shores. They, ever since they were children, wished to visit the mighty cities. They had seen paintings, heard tales, and gotten souvenirs, wanting to finally see the mighty citadel for themselves. Tika, the warrior, heard of the exploits of the mighty Captain Kymer and the great forces he mustered, idolizing him and desperately seeking to meet him for herself. Velte, the assassin, intended to peruse the esteemed libraries and attend the universities. Bayth, the mage, wanted to watch the great electromagic inventor Cerid at work. They had planned the trip for months ahead of time, but then, something rather peculiar happened.

An influx of villagers moved to the province of Wynn one day, just after the summer festivals at Almuj. Whole families, refugees, heroes, even the noblest of Gavel’s nobility found themselves flooding the port of Nemract. The word on the wind was some great destructive force had swept through Gavel, but surely, Tika thought, that could not possibly have been the case. Gavel’s armies were mighty, perhaps even mightier than the Wynnic forces backing them. And yet, not a single Wynnic soldier had returned. The ferries had all but stopped, and the one they managed to bribe into taking them was awful. The bedding was stiff and scratchy, the old boards creaked and croaked at the slightest movement, and the whole ship smelled like wet hay. But finally, after three weeks, the shores of Gavel were in sight...or, rather, it would have been, if not for the strange blue mist obscuring the port.

“Arright lads, this be as close as I’ll risk gettin’. Last chance to stay with me on the return trip. I won’t even charge ye fer it if ye’d like to turn back.” Tika saw the worry in the salty old captain’s eyes as he gazed upon the misty nothingness spread out before them. “Don’t worry about us, old man! We’ll be fine. I’m sure Kymer’s forces would have driven back any threat from Llevigar by now,” Tika proudly proclaimed. He simply lowered his head, almost in defeat. “Take the raft to the shore. If ye’r lucky, there’ll be a workable ship somewhere about the port if ye survive long enough to leave.”

She eyed him oddly, and ran down below deck to tell her friends that they had almost made it! Their childhood dream would finally come true, Llevigar would no longer be words on a page, voices from a bedtime story, pictures on a wall. It would be real, and it would be glorious, she thought, practically throwing the napping Bayth out of his bed. “We’re finally here! This is no time to be sleeping,” she shouted. Bayth groaned in response. “Urgh. I hope the place has a good inn, I could hardly catch a wink on this rickety old thing.”

Leaving the dazed mage to collect his thoughts, she scoured the quarters for any sign of Velte, yelling into every room and knocking her spear on the walls. No answer. He’s probably hiding somewhere above deck, she thought to herself. Typical assassins. As if on cue, Velte’s unmistakable baritone shouted through the boards from above. “I’ve got the raft ready! Hurry up you two, the captain says he’s leaving soon.” “Dang it Velte! Can you let us keep track of you for five seconds?!” She screeched back at him before rushing back up the stairs with her satchel.

Bayth was not far behind, quietly walking behind her. Once again, Velte shouted up at them. “Captain’s in front of the ladder. Once we’re on the raft, he’s pulling up the anchor.” The two climbed down the rope ladder onto the raft, Tika turning back towards the ship. “Thanks a bunch, captain! When we come back to Nemract, we’ll visit you!” He solemnly turned away, bowed over. Is he praying? Tika couldn’t understand how he was so worried over a bit of fog. The form of the ship slowly faded into the haze as they rowed towards Llevigar’s port.

I would like to get this out of the way now, I had all three of these chapters prepared at once. I did not just churn them out in about a minute each between each other.
