For those who don't know what I'm talking about I am referring to the new system for quest and general NPC dialogue.
Previously messages would show up like any others in the chat, but 1.20.2 changed it so that now it shows one line of dialogue, hides all other chat messages until the dialogue is over, gives you slowness and prompts you to press shift. After pressing shift the dialogue also disappears (although you can see some of the last lines of dialogue in the quest book).

I get the impression the content team worked really hard on this system, as I have heard people say they had to go through every quest and line of dialogue, so I really tried to like it, but I can't anymore.
I hate the fact that I can't see what my guild is talking about if a random NPC starts talking, I hate not being able to scroll up to see what was said last, it irks me that I can no longer listen to dialogue while on a horse, and the slowness is a complete pain.

So far everyone I have spoken to has also disliked the new system, and I was wondering whether I was just in my own echo chamber or if that is the opinion of the community at large.

My ideal solution would be to make the new system toggle-able. I have no idea how feasible that is, but I feel like many of us would appreciate that, even if the new system was the default.

I like the new system, but yeah it should be toggleable

I hope the CT kept files of the old dialogue so they don't have to go through every piece of dialogue in the game AGAIN if they were to do that

I find the slowness incredibly annoying and I wish the could add something like middleclicking with your weapon to skip dialogue instead of crouching. Making the new system toggleable would be good as well.

yeah I personally am not too sure which one I prefer more, but there's really no reason not to make it toggleable that I can see, unless it messes up with the game itself

I think the new dialogue is pretty great, the zoom captivates the player into the conversation with the NPC and makes it clear who is actually speaking. (clearly inspired by Oblivion :P)

Pressing (or holding) crouch is pretty intuitive and makes it easier to understand what the NPC is trying to say without skipping over everything into a jumbled mess of words.

Making it toggleable seems like an impossible task because then CT would have to create 2 variations for every dialogue which seems like a lot of work for not a lot of gain. (not sure if this actually how it works tbh but I heard there’s a new scripting system now)

    Judging from the poll..

The CT really needs to ask the community if they want stuff like this, don't they?

I like the new system a whole lot better, just fix the bugs

Two things that I don't like are greying out the rest of the chat and the fact that dialogue doesn't stay in the chat.

They cannot make the new system toggleable. The two dialogue systems simply can't work together, either dialogue is in the new system or it's in the old system.

I'm not entirely sure if it would be possible to make stuff like slowness toggleable - that'd certainly be nice if it is, although if it isn't removing slowness altogether might be a good idea if people dislike it so much.
Uh, didn't they? They first announced it march 26th, had a few weeks of public beta, but only now are people really starting to complain about it. I mean, I know people mentioned it before, but I don't remember any threads like this outside of the last few days since it's actually in-game now.

There are, of course, problems with the new system, such as bugs, slowness being annoying, getting off your horse, holding shift being noticeably slower than holding right click on previously skippable NPCs, but I really don't get why everyone dislikes it so much. We wanted all dialogue to be skippable and readable at your own pace, and now it is. I wouldn't mind if a few parts of it were changed/removed/made toggleable, but seeing as it'd be basically impossible to make the whole thing toggleable, I think it's mostly fine as is.

Yeah no. You just said the absolute exact opposite of what this update was about. Literally entire update was about things that the community desperately wanted for a long time. ROL rework. Raids. Guilds rework. All of that on top of the normal update stuff.

sure, my statement should have been more precise but some examples (other than the dialogue system) was the new weapon models, which most agree suck, the raid party finders (some prefer the social aspect), the champion rank (widely agreed to be pushing the borders of pay-to-win, should’ve asked the community about features instead of just going “haha bomb bell go brr”) the new guild system isn’t much better than the old, and the devs should have asked to see what the guild community wants, especially regarding wars (eg. Getting oneshot by invisible attacks), and finally tome slot requirements being terrible.
All are examples of limited communication with the community, sure, a decent amount of features were definitely welcome

Well, they could at least remove the slow effect if you move away more than x amount of blocks and cancel the dialogue.

Could they not mix the 2 systems? so it's like the old, but when you press shift it goes to the next line.

Slow down the old system, and add the new one to speed through.

    Also remove the slowness

My current problems with the new dialogue system are that it appears randomly for single texts in dungeons or some discoveries and in others it doesnt which makes it extremly inconsistent.
Further I noticed that in some discoveries (for example Shadowy Dealings) it skips forward by itself. This is a problem because of the system that only makes one part of the dialogue appear at once. While that is fixed by the dialogue history in quest book I would still prefer the dialogue to be visible till it is over and then getting all of it deleted at once. It kind of sucks to have to wait through the entire dialogue before being able to read that one message again.
Another thing I really dislike is every other chat message being blocked while a dialogue is happening. For segments with long cutscenes with unskippable dialogue (for example the The Dogun's Defeat discovery) I couldnt use chat for a really long time and sometimes ended up with 30 messages that where delayed. In addition to that in the 24 token room in cur you have to go through multiple lines of unskippable dialogue making chat unusable which has lead to me missing the door opening. In a lot of quests with cutscenes I used to just chat with my guild or with people from my friend list because I already knew the story. This is no longer possible or just more annoying to do because chat is gone every now and then when a new dialogue appears. This has made quests and discoveries a lot more boring for me to repeat multiple times.

Generally I don't have a big problem with this dialogue system but it is very inconvenient in some ways. I have not had bad experiences with the slowness effect or with the system using shift myself yet so I don't really mind if this stays or gets changed. I think the best solution for me would be to have the green dialogue with quest npcs be used with the new system but have the old automatic system for dungeon background dialogue, grayed out texts like "Referick stares at you with soulless eyes..." and quest book update messages/ quest started messages. Other chat messages should not be blocked by npc dialogue but maybe instead be moved to above the latest npc message. The previous npc mesages would then just appear in chat like before the dialogue rework and get deleted after the dialogue.

Edit: I would also like to add that I really like that I can now skip dialogue of characters I can't see or are out of clicking reach.
